This may sound like a stupid question but how do you make porridge?
My kids love Ready Brek but I thought this might be cheaper and more nutritious. Is Ready Brek similar to porridge?

My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

Real porridge oats are not as smooth as ready brek, but a lot tastier and cheaper.
I make it the old fashioned way. One cup of oats, two cups of water or milk or a mix of both. Boil and simmer for 3-4 minutes. Add sugar to taste. Using all milk makes a creamier porridge.
You can make it in the microwave though. Same quantities, but give it five minutes, and a good stir halfway through cooking.
If you're pushed for time, you can make it the night before, and just heat it through in the morning.

Add sultanas for taste, sweetness and fibre, Also add fruit to the top - the kids may love it and you may get away without sweetening it. However, I've never sweetened my porridge - I add the fruit to mine but DS2 (3 yo) just has his plain, made with 1 part oats to 2 parts semi-skimmed milk and loves it.0

Thank you ever so much, will give it a go. I did read somewhere that you had to do something with it the night before and it just baffled me.
Next question, does it matter to the taste if you use the expensive oats or the very basic cheap oats?

If you use the Jumbo Oats you will find these affect the texture of your porridge. They are usually used in muesli mixes. They are recommended for those on the GI diet as been less processed leave more of the work of digesting to the stomach so satisfy over a longer time span.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

I also use Tesco value - I used organic ones once and didn't like them - I think because they were bigger. I have just bought some Jumbo ones, but will be making flapjacks witht them.0
