The glory of porridge (merged)

I'm a Scot & love my porridge. I often have it for lunch or tea as well as breakfast & craved 3 bowls a day during each of my pregnancies
but I make it with proper oatmeal rather than any of the rolled oat variations ... better texture & flavour & those instant & 4-minute varieties are like wallpaper paste, no wonder people don't like porridge if that's all they've tasted!
half medium oatmeal & half pinhead (for the lovely texture) made with water & a little salt at the end of the cooking ... served with cold milk, mmmmm heaven
my grandfather used to eat it the traditional way, the milk wasn't poured over the porridge, but served in a separate bowl or mug & each spoonful was dipped into it before eating0 -
If you want to cut down on salt and / or sugar, try a spoonful of cinnamon on your porridge. I find it's quite palatable like that.Signature removed for peace of mind0

I hide jam in the bottom for my son - its a nice surprise when he hits the bottom of the bowl! Lemon curd and choc spread also works well.
My sis used to like a swirl of single cream with hers, and a sprinkle of vanilla sugar!

Exactly how I like mine! Organic porridge oats, milk and raspberries. Otherwise when I make it with hot milk it's like glue _pale_ _pale_ :silenced: :rolleyes:0 -
Mmmm, was finally cold enough for porridge this morning. Roll on winter!0

Wow! 6 pages about porridge. Makes me smile to think that one of my national dishes is such a hit.
I wish there was a veggie version of stovies...May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
real stovies doesn't have any actual meat in it, but I don't know how nice it would taste ... originally it was just dripping, onions, & potatoes with seasoning & water ... so you'd have to use oil of some sort as a veggie substitute. might be worth experimenting with0

Tesco's organic oats are wonderful, big and hearty, don't like the babyfood types.
I always make it with water and a dollop of honey on top. Although the cook at work makes it with milk and puts cream on top - now that's a treat for once in a blue moon!
Recently, I've been attempting to eat more whole grain so I toast the oats and add loads of seeds, dried fruit and nuts to create my own muesli, it's very scrummy and fills me up all morning.
salyou can't take it with you...0
