  • The Charity: Contact the Elderly

    Its website: www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk

What it is: It relieves loneliness of lonely elderly isolated people.

Why support us: When older people live alone, without family or friends living nearby, loneliness can become their only companion.
Many prefer to live independently, yet it can be a hard and lonely road.
Contact the Elderly helps people aged 75 or older who are lonely, live at home on their own and are unable to easily get out of the house unaided.
Small local groups use volunteer drivers who each pick up 1 or 2 elderly people from their own homes. They take them to the home of a volunteer host where the volunteers and older people spend a few hours together with afternoon tea, usually on a Sunday.
Each group normally meets once a month, welcomed into the homes of different hosts.
Whilst this depends on some 4,500 volunteers (drivers and hosts), nationwide, it needs money to be managed and to grow - It supports some 300 such "groups" but really is only scratching the surface of suitable "guests".

    a. Coeliac UK
    b. http://www.coeliac.org.uk/
    c. Coeliac disease affects 1 in every 100 people
    d. People with Coealiac disease have to follow a diet completely free from Gluten. This means they need special bread, flour, biscuits, beer, pasta, pizza, cakes etc.

On a money saving theme, these products are extremely expensive compared to normal food - from 3-10 times more expensive!
    E.g.
Tesco free from fusilli pasta (gluten free) £2.56/KG
    Tesco normal fusilli pasta £99p/KG

400g white sliced gluten free loaf 49p/100g
Value loaf 5p/100g - Thats ten times the price!
(Even Wharburtons toasie is only 17p/100g)

Coeliac disease is currently incurable, finding a cure would potentially bring monetary relief for over half a million people in Britain alone.

In the UK nine million people have arthritis and 12,000 of them are children.
    That's a lot of us.
    It's not a trendy charity:confused:
But they offer on-line support and a wonderful telephone help line, which helped me.
Maybe you or someone you know might need them too one day
    I hope you don't:smileyhea

    d. The Vine Trust is a charity based in Scotland and supports a wide range of humanitarian projects in Peru in conjunction with Scripture Union. Accommodation and support for streetchildren is provided throughout the country along with running their 3 small "Amazon Hope" medical ships in remote regions of the jungle and providing a basic health service for 100,000+ people. • The County Air Ambulance Trust

    http://www.countyairambulancetrust.co.uk/

Three helicopters serve an area of 8,000 sq miles and a population of over 7.8million. Derbyshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Leicestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Rutland, Warwickshire, the West Midlands and the Welsh borders.

Like the paramedics in this country, without a doubt Air Ambulance save lives that others may take longer to reach. This trust relys solely on charity and helps everyone. With the increase in fuel bills I believe this charity should be funded by the goverment, but as it is not, I cant think of a more worthy charity :A

    I would like to nominate
    Innovate Trust - www.innovate-trust.org.uk

"Supporting disabled people to live valued lives"

Innovate Trust supports adults and children with learning disabilities. The Trust started as a student volunteer project that set up the first model of supported living in Britain. The Trust paved the way for social change in the UK enabling people with learning disabilities to live independently and fully participate in society.

Over 30 years later, the Trust now has 32 supported housing schemes across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, a supported employment agency and three social enterprises that provide employment and training for the people they support, all with the aim of enabling people to take control of their lives, develop skills and have equal choice and access to education, employment and leisure. Money is tight and they need more funds for recruitment, training, befriending schemes for disabled children, equipment for the social enterprises and upgrading of equipment for the disabled.
