  • A) KIDSCAN: Children's Cancer Research Centre

    B)www.kidscan.org.uk

    C) KIDSCAN are improving the lives of children with cancer.

    D) This year, 1 child in 500 will be diagnosed with cancer. Despite new treatments, cancer remains the second most common cause of death in children. Cancer is a disease where part of the body starts to grow out of control. Most treatments for cancer kill dividing cells. The use of these drugs in children with cancer can be very damaging to the growing child as normal growth requires cell division.
This can lead to long term physical, intellectual and emotional developmental problems.
KIDSCAN is unique as its sole aim is to develop new and improved treatments for children with cancer. Our work looks at developing new drugs that will be less damaging for a growing child as well as trying to look at ways of individualising treatments so that the maximum effect against the cancer can be achieved with the minimal damage to the normal tissues in the child.

    c. Provides vital practical help to disadvantaged families (in UK!)

    d. It is staggering to think that there is still poverty here in the UK!
This charity deserves support because it helps everyday ordinary people deal with every ordinary life (Imagine trying to cope on your own with twin toddlers when you can’t afford a single buggy, let alone a double one. Imagine not being able to afford to buy toys for your kids at Christmas.)

The Wood Street Mission provides vital practical help to 1,000 of families in Manchester and Salford by offering children's equipment, clothes , toys bedding etc. free of charge.

The Wood Street Mission's practical assistance coupled with Martin's money saving tips and advice in managing personal finances could be the winning formula to help people get out - and stay out - of poverty!

    1. Pegasus Children's Project

    2. http://www.pegasuschildrensproject.org.uk

    3. Providing sustainable eco-housing for disadvantaged children in Nepal

    4. Pegasus exists to provide love, care and a sustainable environment for the street children of Nepal. Through developing a unique project which provides both housing and schooling for these vulnerable children in a way which has minimal impact on the countryside. Providing Cal-Earth Domes, which are eco-sustainable, the main building material being soil with very little else. They are cool in summer, warm in winter and have been tested in California for earthquakes up to 6.4 on the Richter scale.
Pegasus provide shelter for 74 children that otherwise would be vulnerable to abuse and danger living on the streets. The environment is key, installing Solar Power and using Low Impact Farming (with a Bio Gas project being planned) to empower those in most need to help themselves.
Our aim is to equip the site to be “off the grid”, relying entirely on its own power with solar and wind.

    2. Providing High standard end of life care and much, much more

    3. I nominate Sue Ryder care Nettlebed Hospice, this hospice provides high standard end of life care. I have witnessed first hand the amazing nursing care, respite care, symptom management and many other services needed when a patient is needing palliative care. I could not even start to say about the loving calm enviroment that all the staff give to those needing care and also their families. This hospice has to find 1.4 million pounds from fund raising, private donations and other means to enable that patients receive the kind of care required. They treat people with the utmost dignity and love that everybody in this position deserves to receive. Without them many people would have to suffer or their carers go without expert support. We all deserve to die with dignity and love and this hospice provides it in abundance. without help from the public this hospice would not be able to carry on their incredible work and who knows when we or a loved one may need the help and support they provide. THANK YOU xxx

    Meadow House Hospice
    www.ealingpct.nhs.uk/meadowhouse/
Ealing and Hounslow Specialist palliative care and end of life service
I nominate Meadow House Hospice. Palliative care is the total care of patients whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment. It involves the control of pain, of other symptoms, and of psychological, social and spiritual problems. We support those with advanced, progressive, incurable illness to live as well as possible until they die. Our service enables the supportive and palliative care needs of both patient and family to be identified and met throughout the last phase of life and into bereavement.
  • a. Headway Norwich.
    b. http://www.headwaynorwich.com

    c. Headway Norwich supports head injured clients.
    d. Headway Norwich supports, as many as possible head injured clients (Strokes, Traffic Accidents and other Neurological illness), their families and friends in the Norwich area. Headway Norwich has a dedicated team of seventeen volunteers and ten members of staff who all specialise in different areas so Headway Norwich can give the best support and training to the clients whom attend. The Headway Norwich centre was opened on Monday 15th March 2002 and began with one member of staff and one client and their carer. The centre initially offered an art and craft activity and a good cooked meal but has increased the activities offered, and considerable increased the number of clients helped. Headway Norwich operates four days a week. My wife, an NHS nurse specialising in neurological rehabilitation, has referred many patients to this centre, which is not funded by the NHS but does valuable work for its clients.
  • Montgomeryshire Cat Rescue. Registered Charity 1096268

    http://www.montysmoggies.co.uk

Low budget cat rescue eeking out every penny.

Montysmoggies take in and re-home cats & kittens. Funded by donations (Gift Aid when possible) from our activities, we use our pot of money as efficiently as possible. When times are hard and circumstances change the cats are left to fend for themselves. Some are lucky and arrive directly but others have to be caught. With food and security they can be made available to new homes where they can start a new life. Rehabilitation can take many months but every step forward is worth the effort. Some never make it and stay with us to live their lives out. Felines make loyal companions to many people whether with a family or alone. The labour of love comes free but everything else costs. Money is spent with great care in the sassy hunt for bargains. One final thought; get them snipped before they use the phenomenon of compound interest.
