    • d) In the current economic climate when we are all concerned about inflation, particularly the cost of food, the work that Thatu has done in South Africa since 2004 is so important. Thatu was a young man who lived in South Africa. Paid work was scarce, but he supported his family through occasional gardening jobs. He died of AIDS - just four months earlier he had been fit enough for strenuous work. Thatu, a UK based charity, has borrowed his name and helps fund food gardens with far-reaching benefits. Thatu supports these self-help initiatives by providing training, tools, seeds, compost etc. to create school and community food gardens that work with the environment and are self-sustaining. Using permaculture, once established, the gardens produce their own compost, seeds, mulch and, in the guise of chickens, their own weed clearance and manure! Most of all they provide essential nutrition and a source of income long term.

I would like to nominate Exeter Womens Aid.
    www.exeterwomensaid.org.uk.
Ending violence & abuse against women & children

1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives. In Britain 2 women a week are killed by an ex or current partner. This charity offers support to women, children and young people across Devon who have experienced abuse and violence in their home. Working with individuals from 5 to 80 + they offer emotional support, practical help and refuge for those that need it. They work with young people, educating them about healthy and abusive relationships so that they can enter into balanced non abusive relationships. They work with children who have witnessed violence, or who have been abused themselves. This is a fantastic small charity, covering a large geographical area, that provides life saving refuge and on going support to hundreds of women and children.

    Womens Aid

Working to end violence & abuse against women & children.

National Womens Aid supports over 500 domestic and sexual abuse support services around the UK. In Britain 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives. In this country 2 women a week are killed by a current or ex partner, a shockingly high figure. Children are often greatly affected. When there are children in the household, the majority witness the violence that is occurring, and in 80% of cases, they are in the same of the next room. This charity supports local services in providing support, help and life saving refuges for women and children. They also campaign to raise awareness of this often hidden epidemic and work to dispel the shame and secrecy that surrounds it. If you haven't been affected by domestic violence yourself, there's a good chance a friend or relative has. Please support this important work!
  • :o Thanks for supporting Oppertunity International - Helen Taylor

    b. http://www.opportunity.org.uk/

    c. Microfinance - Giving the poor a working chance.

    d. Opportunity International UK gives people in developing countries credit, not charity. It provides the basic financial services of micro-loans, savings and insurance – services we take for granted here in the UK. A small loan and training can enable a poor person with initiative but no access to formal banking to develop a microenterprise. While charity can create dependence, Opportunity International’s clients achieve dignity and self-esteem by supporting their families through their own hard work. 98% of funds loaned are repaid, so money donated can be lent again and again - financial recycling in action. What greater embodiment of the MSE spirit![/quote]
