Brief Description: Finding loving homes for children in care

Why MAS Should be Supported: Children are at the centre of everything done at MAS. We find families for older, emotionally vulnerable children as well as children from a wide range of ethnic and religious backgrounds. All of the children are in care and have experienced abuse or neglect and many are considered “hard to place” because of their experience. Hard to place or not, every child needs a loving family, especially those who have not had the best start in life. As more than 4,000 children in care are waiting for a permanent family, it is vital that agencies, such as MAS, tirelessly work to find them loving homes. MAS provides permanency for children by working to match a family to their needs and supporting them for life. By being highlighted by your organisation, more people may come forward to adopt. Additionally, the essential work of MAS could continue with the valued support.

I would like to nominate this very worthy charity. They are raising awareness and providing screening of young people's hearts to prevent sudden death. My friend died aged 35, leaving 4 children under 10yrs. and now his sister has an ICD fitted to her heart which will shock her should her heart stop. As many as 8 seemingly young, fit people die suddenly every week in the UK, so this is not a rare condition. Please visit the website to read about the great work they do - they deserve to be recognized!
IN MEMORY OF SIMON PANGBORN - SO SORELY MISSED BY SO MANY.
  • I would like to nominate AICH counselling service. AICH is a free counselling service for young people between the ages of 14 and 15. AICH operates in the Cambridgeshire area and is open to any young person that feels distress, trauma, is suffering bereavement, victim of bullying, depressed, self harming or is abusing drugs or alcohol. The service is delivered by a team of 30 qualified volunteer counsellors. Counselling is a difficult area to raise funds as alot of grants makers to not support counselling. This is a very worthy cause. AICH offers 104 hourly appointments per week, sees approx 350 young people per year and has a sucess rate of change of over 75%. This enables young people to look at their sociabilty, intergrates them positively back into society and makes a more healthier community. Young people receive on going confidential sessions on a weekly basis and gives them the space to explore their lives, choices and helps empower them to make their own positive life choices.
  • Good to see Home-Start UK nominated. Very worthwhile organisation that supports families via local people. Parents supporting parents.

    c) Family support at home through trained parent volunteers

    d) We all know that parenting isn’t easy! But when you’re struggling to cope with poverty, isolation, mental or physical illness, life itself, let alone parenting can often seem like a towering mountain to climb. That’s where Home-Start comes in. All over the UK, Home-Start recruits, trains and supervises local parent volunteers to visit families with children under five, at home, offering support and friendship.
Parents helping parents; it’s a simple idea that really works.

Home-Start volunteers are a lifeline to families during difficult times. We work with partner agencies like Turn2us to access specialist advice including finance, benefits and housing, whilst also providing hands on help in household budgeting and routines, and emotional support.

Then when families feel confident and ready to go it alone, parents often go on to volunteer for Home-Start themselves. Who better to support struggling families than people who have gone through exactly the same situations?
  • a. World Cancer Research Fund UK (WCRF-UK)
    b. http://www.wcrf-uk.org/
    c. Research on prevention of cancer through diet, exercise & healthy lifestyle
    d. So many charities focus on researching a cure for cancer, WCRF UK's approach is to educate people so as not get it in the first place. WCRF UK's research has shown that a third of cancers can be prevented by eating healthily, exercising regularly and watching your weight.
As well as funding research into the prevention of cancer, they also have a range of education programmes for suitable for all different ages. Their children's programme (how I know about them) focuses on making healthy food and exercise fun for children to encourage them to make their own healthy choices.
They also produce a number of health awareness publications which I've seen in my doctor's surgery, which educate not just on cancer prevention but general good health.
I know that the research says only about a third can be prevented and people will say that you still could get it but I’d rather know that I’d done all I can to reduce my risk so that’s why I’m nominating WCRF UK.

Free impartial advice for everyone in Rother District.

Rother, population 90,000 in an area of 200 square miles. There are several small towns and villages in this rural area of England. Rother CAB is staffed mainly by volunteers, [I’m one].
Yearly this CAB sees 5-6 thousand people with a wide variety of questions and problems. We help them get the information they need to help themselves.
The CAB has 2 project worker making home visits, mainly DLA/AA form completion and money advice. So far this year the project has helped clients with just over 1 million pounds of debt. Last year’s figure of £1,100,000 was for the whole bureau! Benefit advice returned £128,000 to the economy last year.
Increasing client numbers and higher costs mean that our funding does not keep up with our aim: provision of free advice to all. Please help us see more clients, not less.

    a. Opportunity International UK

    b. http://www.opportunity.org.uk/

    c. Microfinance - Giving the poor a working chance.

    d. Opportunity International UK gives people in developing countries credit, not charity. It provides the basic financial services of micro-loans, savings and insurance – services we take for granted here in the UK. A small loan and training can enable a poor person with initiative but no access to formal banking to develop a microenterprise. While charity can create dependence, Opportunity International’s clients achieve dignity and self-esteem by supporting their families through their own hard work. 98% of funds loaned are repaid, so money donated can be lent again and again - financial recycling in action. What greater embodiment of the MSE spirit!
:TSmart aid or what? About time the country got a grip of this.

I would like to nominate Colchester Gateway.
it is "A social club for people with learning disabilities"
Contact details Mandy Hudson, Colchester Gateway, Wilson Marriage School, Colchester, Essex
The club meets two nights a week with a membership of over 200. It is run by volunteers and some paid staff. The clients have an opportunity to socialise with their friends, experience new things and it gives much needed respite to families.
The club has a disco, an art room, a drama club and a coffee shop for the clients enjoyment.
Not only do the clients meet at the club, trips are arranged e.g. theme parks, weekends away and to the theatre locally and in London.
The staff and trustees work tirelessly to ensure that the social aspect for this group of people is to the fore.
After lots of fundraising they have recently purchased a mini bus to enable them to travel more.
I feel that this is a well worthy cause to be considered as this client group is rarely considered nationally and they can become segregated from society.
