  • a. Opportunity International UK

    b. http://www.opportunity.org.uk/

    c. Microfinance - Giving the poor a working chance.

    d. Opportunity International UK gives people in developing countries credit, not charity. It provides the basic financial services of micro-loans, savings and insurance – services we take for granted here in the UK. A small loan and training can enable a poor person with initiative but no access to formal banking to develop a microenterprise. While charity can create dependence, Opportunity International’s clients achieve dignity and self-esteem by supporting their families through their own hard work. 98% of funds loaned are repaid, so money donated can be lent again and again - financial recycling in action. What greater embodiment of the MSE spirit!

and a lot of kids will jump for joy.:j :j :j

    Thanks
  • Our sight is something most of us take for granted,
    but
Every minute a child goes BLIND.
Working together we can give more people the
    precious gift of sight.

To be unsighted for a day or two is bad enough:
To be unsighted for life when its treatable, is immoral.

Please see their web site at:

Please support "World Sight Day" 9 October 2008.

i would go for any of these, apart from mcdonalds - may mean well, but isnt it covert marketing to the kids, making them used to their logo for when they grow up? just like chocolate cigarettes, when i were a lad.. thankfully the real ones made me throw up at first (and last) attempt..
Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)

  • a) Gwellheans
    b) www.gwellheans.co.uk
    c) Supporting people in recovery from substance abuse
    d) Gwellheans is the only organisation offering this type of support in Cornwall. Its aim is to equip individuals with the skills and confidence necessary to avoid relapsing and to move into community life through social, educational, and therapeutic activities. By building motivation and raising aspirations, their clients can develop their abilities and skills enabling them to overcome their barriers to moving forward. Many clients have been able to go back to work or achieve qualifications with the help that Gwellheans provides. As public transport links can often be convoluted and expensive in Cornwall, Gwellheans reimburses clients their travel costs to enable them to overcome this potential barrier to attending Gwellheans. Any extra funding would enable them to continue to provide this vital service.

    a) ACT - Association for Children's Palliative Care
    b) www.act.org.uk
    c) Valuing the short lives of life-limited children
    d) ACT is the only organisation working across the UK to achieve a better quality of life and care for every life-limited child and young person, and their family.
    • Every child should have access to the services and equipment they need, wherever they live.
    • Families should be supported in caring for their child and given information, and choices.
    • Young people should be supported to achieve their ambitions and goals.
    • Ongoing funding should be allocated to ensure that existing services survive, and essential new ones are established.
ACT have a huge job to do, yet very little funding. They have made a tremendous difference to the standard and availability of care for all life-limited children in the UK.
