• I would like to nominate NADS, and to wish all other charities nominated the very best of luck in this process.

a) The National Association of Disabled Supporters

b) www.nads.org.uk

c) Promoting equality of access for football supporters

d) Since 1998, NADS has worked in partnership with government organisations, football authorities and professional football clubs to ensure improved access for disabled football supporters. Conservative estimates say that over 30,000 disabled people attend football matches in the UK every weekend. Without the work of NADS, many disabled football fans would be unable to enjoy an experience many able-bodied people take for granted. The Government stresses the social and economic importance of football to the UK, and the economic spending power of disabled people in the UK is measured at around £80 billion. Therefore NADS is a relevant charity for MSE to support. NADS is a small charity, and would be extremely grateful for any assistance from MSE or any users of the forum. The website is currently down for scheduled maintenance, but please feel free to use the contact details (via the link) if you would like information about NADS.

Thanks,
Paul Jamieson
• How sad with all of the wonderful Charities listed here someone would nominate Freecycle.

Yes, freecycling is a wonderful wonderful thing to do for our planet. There are so many great freecycling groups in the world doing great things. But to single out one freecycling directory over all of the others is just sad.

I would have to imagine that the folks here at MSE.com realize this was just a plug for Freecycle not a legitimate nomination at all.

You have all of these plus many more directories that freecycle. I don't see why someone would nominate one and not all of these wonderful freecycling directories.

AroundAgain.org
FreeUse.org
FreeSharing.org
FullCircles.org
SharingIsGiving .org
ReUseIt Network.org
Recycle4Free.com

Lets be real and freecycle around the world, but let the grant money go to a real IN NEED Charity. Everyone should know that freecycling is free! Folks volunteer their time and energy, real freecyclers do NOT get paid. Thus there is no reason grant money should go to any freecycling group or groups. This is so plain and simple, we are volunteers around the globe, grant money should not go to us.

A real freecycler

a. Freecycle UK

b. www.uk.freecycle.org

c. Local community groups saving money and the environment

d. The charity has been formed to offer structured support for Freecycle groups all round the UK. Brilliant work is being done by volunteers up and down the country running internet based groups for their communities to facilitate reuse and recycling to cut the amount of stuff going to landfill. The aim of the charity is to provide services and support, including a more user-friendly website, to ensure:
• provision of more groups
• continuity of services
• effective assistance network for group moderators and members.
Freecycle provides a great service to a membership of over a million in the UK - saving money, building local communities, cutting down on landfill. Support from MSE in recommending the service has been much appreciated. It would be wonderful if volunteers and members could also benefit from a funded central infrastructure. Thanks for reading
• I would like to nominate Afasic, charity no. 1045617 as one of your charities.
My son has a speech & language disorder that affected his ability to learn.
He started school not talking and did not do so until after 18 months of intensive speech & language therapy & specialist teaching at the language unit . He received this support throughout his schooling and was able to go onto further education and to complete a computer science degree. Afasic was started by a S&L therapist in 1968. Afasic was a great source of support to me and I would like to help them to continue help other parents and their children.
Address is Afasic, 20 Bowling Green Lane, London EC1R 0BD.

• I would like to nominate:

a. HERIB (Hull and East Riding Institute for the Blind).

b. http://www.herib.co.uk

c. Support and promoting independence for visually impaired people.

d. HERIB has been going for over 140 years but it is its ability to adapt and develop to meet the changing needs of visually impaired people in the East Yorkshire area that makes it so special. Completely self funded, it provides a lifeline to over 2500 people with sight loss, covering both urban and rural areas. There are plans to extend the pioneering Sports and Leisure Group, whose challenges give so much confidence to the members and to provide more services for visually impaired teenagers . It aims to challenge public preconceptions of visual impairment and offer support and assistance with independent living, communication, mobility and access.
• a) ADRA-UK
b) http://www.adra.org.uk/
c) world wide disaster & famine relief.
d) ADRA has sought to relieve human suffering and poverty in most countries of the world. In past years their doctors, nurses and disaster relief workers have been helping in areas of special distress throughout the world. ADRA-UK has been involved in humanitarian aid not only abroad but also here in the UK. Each year special compelling projects are earmarked for support, but a portion of the money donated goes into an Emergency Disaster Response Fund. This enables ADRA-UK to respond quickly to disasters in the UK and other parts of the world. While many charities were finding it difficult to get into Burma, after the recent disaster, ADRA was able to get straight in, and was able to save many lives. They are also working in China after the earthquake there (as well as many other areas in the world).

Hi

I would like to nominate The Red Balloon Learner Centre.

Description - for the recovery of bullied children.

www.redballoonlearner.co.uk

Four years ago my daughter stopped going to school because she was in severe pain. She gradually became more and more disabled to the point that she was hardly eating, she could not tolerate any form of noise, her body became distorted and she struggled to walk at all, her understanding regressed to pre-school level (she was 12 at the time) and she lost the ability to write and even speak properly. After many months under psychiatric care she began to admit that being bullied at school had been the trigger for her illness and she was eventually referred to Red Balloon. I thank God that the first Red Balloon school was right here in our town since I was a single mother, on benefits, without transport. Within one month my daughter's physical symptoms were fully recovered. With the schools continued mix of tailored learning and counselling, I was able to get out and find work. Our lives have improved a zillion percent as a result, and more important than anything else, my daughter has a future that she might not have otherwise had. Please support the founding of similar centres in other towns in the UK. Thank you.
• a) small local part of Family Welfare Association
b) www.fwa.org.uk
c) Poverty/debt advice/support families, domestic violence, multi-ethnic.
d
Small project in bigger Charity. Gives support to families and individuals, all ages, when they most need it -practical, emotional and financial help so that they can overcome their problems. Tackles some of the most complex and difficult issues facing families today – including domestic abuse, mental health problems, physical/mental disabilities and severe financial hardship. Also offers preventative work e.g. around Domestic abuse – for women/ for young people Less fashionable end of the charity spectrum for Funders – difficult for a small local project to survive – yet been around for 25 years and extremely busy in the community it serves – 3 of the 4 poorest wards in Bradford (one of the 10 poorest cities in England). Fabulous dedicated multi-lingual team working very hard & needing more staff. Does advice sessions, group work & outreach e.g. to elderly & those with mobility or other difficulties. Won’t turn people away if need identified. Brilliant!
:money:
• a. Great Ormond Street Childrens Charity (GOSCC)
b. http://www.gosh.org/
c. Great Ormnond Streets' Charity
d. Each Year G.O.S.H treats hundreds of critically ill cihldren that can not be treated anywhere else in the uk, they are in the process of building a new heart and lung centre as well as major reburishment works, they need to raise £150million for this building work, they need our help.
• a. Nowzad Dogs (Registered Charity Number 1119185)
b. http://www.nowzaddogs.co.uk/
c. Rescuing stray and abandoned dogs worldwide, set up by Marines returning from Afghanistan.
d. Their mission statement is: To relieve the suffering of animals, predominantly stray and abandoned dogs, in need of care, attention and to provide and maintain rescue facilities for the care and treatment of such animals, especially the dogs of Afghanistan.
A Marine I know has just rescued a puppy, in Afghanistan, and the charity are going to pay to bring her to England to live with him, when he returns. I want to give something back to the charity for this, and as they aren't very well known, they would really benefit from this..

Here's some info from their website:

In Southern Afghanistan, where desert meets mountains lies the small war torn town of Now Zad. Here during late 2006 a group of Royal Marines attempted to look after several stray dogs that had been abandoned by their owners. The choice of leaving them to fend for themselves was not an option, the dogs were scared, lonely and in a poor state of health. The dogs became the Marines' companions for the 3 months they spent in the small town facing the daily threat of attack. The dogs became known as "Nowzad", "Jena", "RPG", "AK", "Tali", "Dushka" and "Patches" . An Afghan dog's life is not one of comfort at the best of times; most of the day is spent hunting for scraps of food or hiding from the hot desert sun during the summer and the freezing cold of an Afghan winter night. There is no pampered pet status in Afghanistan.

When their tour of duty in Afghanistan was over, the Marines came home but the dogs didn't, so the Nowzad Dogs charity was formed which is dedicated to continuing the Nowzad Dogs story - it is sad and happy but always ongoing and always will be - please click here to read more.
• I suffer from this illness and would like to nominate the following charity :

The Dystonia Society
http://www.dystonia.org.uk/

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder affecting 40,000 UK sufferers

Effective fund-raising and raising of public awareness is made more difficult given the fact that many people have never heard of Dystonia, despite the fact that it is estimated to be about ten times more common than motor neurone disease. Indeed, until recently, many GPs were unfamiliar with the condition.

Although awareness of dystonia is increasing and the outlook for people with dystonia is improving, The Dystonia Society, a registered charity, is working hard to speed up the processes of both research and recognition. Being nominated as one of your supported charities would make a HUGE difference to the impact this Charity could achieve.
