Yes you can do it via home insurance. Or a specialised gadget/phone insurer.

Insurance offered by carriers is always overpriced.

Had my 3 contract phone stolen recently. Thank goodness had insurance through my Natwest bank account.
Insurance company settled claim and have just had a new handset this morning. Had to ring 3 for a new sim card and they are charging me £5.11 for a new one.... !!!!!!..... challenged insurance company and they said "no, have to get sim from network provider, some charge, some don't".
Was told by insurance that if phone stolen with sim, then claim ok, if phone stolen without sim, then no claim would have been allowed.

So, I have paid £25 excess for the phone and another £5.11 for sim card.....

Also, if you take 3rd party insurance (i.e not with 3), they are a nightmare to get info out of.... Had to get bills, itemised call list and they were v slow to get this to me... They kept telling me that "if I had their insurance it would be easier and it was my fault for using third party insurance".

Aargh.... at least I have a new handset but just cannot use it yet until 3 get their act together and send the sim.....

  • Are you suggesting that 3 are deliberately being difficult because you insure your phone via a different insurer?

Yes.... They kept saying that if I had their insurance the claim would have been dealt with quicker
