I hated stitching Tatty Teddy. I've done 2 now and both times I switched the fabric to evenweave to make the backstitching easier. They look fab when done-can post pics if you like-but they are hard going. The shades of grey are very similar, so I guess you have the longer, brighter evenings to make that easier. But I did swear a lot when I was stitching them(:o) -I certainly didn't find them relaxing. Not to say I wouldn't stitch another, though! I'm sure I have several in my stash box. Which sampler were you planning on stitching?

Hi it is the 7th one down one this site http://www.past-impressions.co.uk/acatalog/Tatty_Ted_Bear_Cross_Stitch_Kits.html

I have no doubt that anyone I choose I will not find it relaxing lol, do you recommend anything else for wedding for a beginner?, I really want to do
    something nice for my sister

Yes please if you could post a picture that would be great, thanks

Oh, it's cute! I've not seen that one before. I will post the pics of my ones below. I can't remember how long they took me to be honest. I just recall lots of naughty words and being grumpy! But I am proud of them and I do like them once they're finished. Apologies for the sizes of the pics!

Here's a Lizzie Kate one I did. It was soooo easy to stitch as it's all whole stitches. I used hand dyed fabric to make it look extra special.

How about something else instead of a wedding sampler? Like a kind of welcome/house thing? Depending on her sense of humour, there's some good American ones I've seen. I want to do one that says "Everyone brings joy into this house...some when they arrive, others when they leave!" Or "Welcome to the nuthouse". But I appreciate that's not everyones sense of humour.
I would stick to something which you think you will enjoy stitching and that won't be pushing you to finish it in time. Rather go smaller/simpler and if you want to, stitch a card too! Let me know if I can help any more. Any excuse to look on Sew & So for ideas...LOL! :rotfl:

Thanks Ruth honey, those are gorgeous, have decided to by a small card topper thingy from my local craft shop and play with that first and then see how I get on with that before I order anything.

If you can't find any frames, could you finish it off another way? Bell pull ends? Making into a small pillow? Covering an album, so they can keep some wedding photos in it?

Ruth_honey you are a star :j Why on earth I didn't think of the alternatives before I don't know. It will also be a nice suprise for the happy couple as at the moment they think it is going to be a framed piece. Thank you, I will take a wander round town tomorrow for alternative inspiration.

    love the tatty teddies Ruth.

Mad Frog, that is a stunning sampler but I agree that it does look fairly detailed. That is what takes the time, the switching of threads. No cross stitch is hard, some just needs more concentration than others. If you decide to try it we are all here to help if you have questions. But I would allow yourself as much time as you can, if you only have a couple of hours a week then August might be asking a lot. If you have a couple of hours a night, then it is probably do-able.

My SIL collects the ornaments and I have been thinking about doing a cushion or something for her for Christmas or Birthday. Trouble is I have so much to do I'm not sure which Christmas or Birthday it'll be for. She will be 30 in just under a year so that would be a good time.

Fingers crossed for a baby that sleeps so that I'll have time to do it:rolleyes:

    Hi there all

just taking a break from my sewing and thought I would catch up :D

Mad frog -How about something like this?

    http://www.thehappycross-stitcher.com/product.php?xProd=5342

this one is nice as it is pretty colours (much more fun to do than lots of greys ;)) -you could do this on a bigger piece of fabric and then have a nice big mount when you frame it... I think it's really pretty -and you could add beads if you had time...

I did the tatty teddy one once -the one on the swing... I have to say it bored me...but it does mean I have spare threads if you decide to do one and run short :rotfl:

im sure your sister will love whatever you choose -simply because you have put so much love and thought into it :D

right -back to the sewing :p

The finished firescreen! Lacing the back was incredibly difficult - maybe I should have tried something smaller as a first attempt. I realised the top and bottom green lines marking the fabric centre show when it's mounted in the firescreen, but decided they weren't massively obvious and I could put up with them. Stitching a line of fabric over them would have looked a bit odd, and it was really tight to fit in in the screen anyway, without adding extra mount or something. Now I just have to decide which of my projects to do next...

    Well done *insert fanfare*:j:j
ooohh now you get to start a nice new clean piece of fabric:T
I have looked at that dictionary of cakes kit about an hour ago..I was quite taken with it -even though its not my kind of thing....then I saw a row of cupcakes and they are lovely... i think I might do some of those kind of things (eventually) for our kitchen when we move :D

    this is it...

Mrsm I've spotted that one before - I love that one too!:D Trouble is, there are loads that are good for a kitchen, its just choosing that's the hard bit!
Still trying to decide what to do next. Meant to say, Im going to follow your instructions for framing, as Im too mean to pay mad money to get someone to do it for me. Do you frame yours with or without glass and is it 1oz wadding? Im not sure if usng glass would detract from the design.
Lyndasharp: your firescreen is wonderful - very well done and thanks for posting your photo! Its really terrific!

    oooohhhh lynda Sharp

Im going to start looking at this thread with one hand over my eyes -I keep seeing more lovely designs... I have hung my nose over that design once or twice before and you have made a great job of it :T-I wouldn't have seen the lines if you hadn't mentioned them -so don't tell anyone ;)

Jintyb.. I had the first 2 biggies I did (american indian ones) framed and I think they were about £45 each -about 10 years ago  although I did have frames made... then I tried doing my own and I do a better job than the framers started doing...
I use the 1oz wadding and glass -it makes it a tight fit but you can still fasten the frames ok..and then when you look at them they look slightly padded where they meet the mount..
When we move back to the UK and finally settle in the house we know we will stay in Im going to be replacing all my glass with the non-reflective stuff -its brilliant, both my indians have that and it makes a lot of diference. My mum has that in all hers and I tend to frame them for her when I go home ;), mind she is working on this one at the moment -

    http://www.sewandso.co.uk/cgi-bin/find/db.cgi?db=zoom&uid=&Prod_Code=7010&ww=on&do=search_results

and at 3ft 6" high it should be fun to frame :p

I have done quite a bit today -although it is still hard to see "where".... mind as its for my mum I don't mind as she will appretiate how much work goes into them... right back to the x-stitch I go -happy stitching everyone

Mrsmacawber : that is absolutely beautiful , it will be stunning when put in a frame! I know what you mean - sometimes you feel like youre stitching for hours and you cant see any difference, then one day all of a sudden it all comes together!
You are a very bad girl making me look at sew and so again! Have a great evening everyone!
