:D This is a really interesting thread to read! Just found it last night.

I have been only doing cross stitching for about 6 months (BF got me into it he used to do it years ago still does sometimes) and I've loved it ever since.

Though i do find the material a bit dear to buy.

Also i have read about the different materials people use on here and whats the difference between Aida (what i use) and the rest even weave and all that?

I get my cottons from the market so the colour chart is really good for getting the right colours and i just found a cross stitch designer CD-Rom in a charity shop which i think looks fab for things i don't have a pattern for.

Am doing something for a friends birthday at the moment, i tent to do small things and most the time mix and match on one piece of material.

Great way of passing the time and being artistic.

    Hi Maria and welcome.

Have you taken a look at ebay? I have sold some kits on there ridiculously cheaply (and also bought plenty:o).

I mostly use Aida as that is mostly what comes in the kits but I love evenweave which is wonderful and have tried linen a couple of times but those blocks are not even and give a much more rustic appearance.

I am currently doing some farm animals for my Fairy Godson:rotfl:from Heritage stitchcraft. I got them on ebay brand new for less than half what I would have paid in a shop.

    Hi Maria, welcome aboard!
Like Harley, I use ebay a lot for supplies and also www.sewandso.com when Im feeling flush!
What colour chart do you use? I was lucky enough to be given a load of threads from my mum and my aunt but most of them are from the market and I hav no idea how to match them !

    Hi Jinty....
You can buy a shade card -I got my mum one ..but I posted this link the other day after stumbling across it -hope it helps
    http://yarntree.com/075dmc.htm

Click on the page 1 etc and it will show the colours -so I guess you could hold your threads against the screen to match to the nearest -might drive you loopy but will save £15 :j:rotfl:
and at the bottom there is a section for swapping DMC to anchor and vice versa..
Hope that rambling makes sense :rotfl:
