The consequences for not paying back a debt are not strong enough in this country.
I don't agree with you here. In my experience, the card companies will do everything they can to ensure repayment. They will harass customers to make partial payments, they will sell the debt on to DCAs, ultimately they WILL take the customer to court.
It is not a pleasant position to be in to have debts that you can't pay. The Debt Collection Agencies will even send people to your home (when they actually have no right to do so) and they will shout abuse from the street and let the neighbours know that you have bad debts.
I think that with the exception of bankruptcy, the Card Companies do generally manage to get their money back, even if they have to make a Full and Final settlement.0 -
OT Warning! Not related to Money Saving At all!
My Cap1 Card has been dormant for a while now, so I charged £200 on it today! For this..
Unlocked BlackBerry 8310. This is a real workhorse phone that truly focus on e-mailing and productivity unlike the iPhone.
I can't wait to get it! My wallet will be unusually light at the end of next month when payment is due. I'm paying it off in full, ofcourse.
P.S. Look at this website: http://celebrityblackberrysightings.com/
I can't believe so many A-list stars are addicted to e-mails lol0 -

The consequences for not paying back a debt are not strong enough in this country. All that seems to happen to people who default is, they don't get further credit until it drops off their credit file. Even those who go bankrupt can be back spending again in under five or six years.

It's an insult to those of us who struggle to keep everything up to date.
This bit got to me, I know 2 people who have committed suicide because of debt.
Things can go badly wrong and sometimes options are not too great.

That blackberry is a "want" not a "need" tho isn't it? So it could be classed as an unnecessary luxury?
Back to the topic.. What is the prime determinant of your credit score? I have a few bad debts lurking in my background (CCj x2) but also a recently well managed bank account (12 months good), would like to get a credit card as useful for travelling and buying stuff on the internet. Also is there a cheaper way of finding out your credit score than paying £14.50 to experian?? (also what are low medium and high credit scores.. 100..300..1000??)tribuo veneratio ut alius quod they mos veneratio vos0 -
Nice new toy mate, well worth £200, is it an ebay special?Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0

You are absolutely correct. I just can't help it, I am addicted to gadgets ~ lol. It's an expensive behaviour! Anyway, I will keep this Blackberry until my Vodafone contract ends in March next year when I will switch to O2 to get a subsidised 3G iPhone or BlackBerry Thunder.Nice new toy mate, well worth £200, is it an ebay special?
Cheers PROLAINT. In deed it was an eBay specialBought it from a PowerSeller and the item was listed as "BNIB sealed". I'll report back when I receive it on Tuesday.
Should there be a problem I really am hoping PayPal and Cap1 will be there for me when I need them!0
