The consequences for not paying back a debt are not strong enough in this country. All that seems to happen to people who default is, they don't get further credit until it drops off their credit file. Even those who go bankrupt can be back spending again in under five or six years.

It's an insult to those of us who struggle to keep everything up to date.

This bit got to me, I know 2 people who have committed suicide because of debt.
Things can go badly wrong and sometimes options are not too great.

That's tragic of course and I'm not trying to minimise what many people go through, but too many people play the system and escape their responsibilities.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to your friends.
  • Like with many issues, it's the people who make a farce of things that tend to get the publicity. I've made a mess, I'm now trying to crawl back from that mess. This is one of the ways I can do that responsibly:) I can understand your frustrations, I think we all have a pet peeve. Mine is people who lie to obtain social housing. I think we just need to have a communal pinch of salt every now and again. Or a small vodka and coke;)

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

    Fair enough.

I do appreciate that different people will have had very different experiences in life and perhaps see things from a different angle, so no probs

...and they [Debt Collection Agencies] will shout abuse from the street and let the neighbours know that you have bad debts.

Oh yeah, they will pull all sorts of horrible tricks to get repayment.

They will sit outside people's houses for hours waiting for them to come out. I once saw a documentary about DCAs and some really unpleasant lowlife collectors were even telling neighbours that the debtor concerned had tried to stab them with HIV infected needles (which ofcourse was a complete lie).

They are not nice people to deal with
