Once you have your BMR you can calculate your daily calorie needs as per the links posted earlier. This is my spreadsheet showing the formulas:

    [removed]

If you need the formulas for inactive, or very/extra active you can get those from the links posted before. I've just used lightly active and moderately active here (the links also explain how much exercise we are talking about).

When you've popped your BMR into the top cell, you will get a set of numbers you can use to cross reference against your calorie intake and exercise for that week, such as this:

    [removed]

So if I have averaged 1200cals/day for the week and been lightly active, I can expect to lose approx 1lb. If I have been moderately active I can expect to lose approx 1.5lb.

Next Monday I recalculate the BMR and pull up the next set of numbers then make my plan for the week ahead.

    * Just to explain the red numbers, as 1200 is the minimum recommended intake for women, when it falls below that number I use red, to show me that it isn't desirable to try for that amount of weight loss in a week (just noticed the 1192 should have been red too... gosh this is all getting so marginal for me now - hence the micro-managing I guess...)

he seems like he likes football, cant you contact his mates and see if they'll invite him/organise a kick about once or twice a week? that'll be a good start. cardio is what he needs to start with, to help burn the fat, so running, cycling, swimming, even walking, will do him good.
make sure his meals have protein (eggs meat fish etc) carb (potato bread etc) and fruit and veg.
Meals should be between 3-5g fat per 100g if he wants to lose it.
but if hes 18, hes probably still growing, so its likely it could still be puppy fat.
Im only 22, but I was stick thin until I passed 18/19, and now I'm struggling to shrink from a size 16!

most of all, give him support. my most difficult times are when the people around me dont understand and flaunt fatty foods in front of me and offer it to me, practically forcing it and complaining when I refuse it.
When I come sweating in from the gym everyday, straight to work, laden with salad and juice, people just don't understand.
Understanding him is the best thing you could possibly do.

Also, get him to creat a food diary. It'll really hit home as to how much he's eating, and where he's going wrong.
And eat much slower, it takes 30minutes for your stomach to tell your brain its full, which is why we so often overeat and feel bloated and sick after meals!
