The pinks...on the ebay forum people obviously post anonymously as they are a tough crowd over there. However to show that the person responding on a thread is representing ebay, they have their posts outlined in pink, hence 'pinks' basically it is the official ebay response to questions.

The pinks seem to live on a different planet sometimes as they insist on things like, paypal on collected items isn't a problem at all whereas anyone with an ounce of common sense who has actually read the paypal terms can see this is a major problem.

If you read some of the thread that I posted somewhere it gets very interesting when paypal themselves get involved, as the official paypal response is that paypal is NOT suitable for items that cannot be tracked online to delivery, and they do not move from that point. Yet the pinks still say everything is fine and dandy!

Well, I have been thining about this.

We have to accept Paypal so anyone looking through the list can find an ad that has within the listing Cash On Collection only and can then report your listing and it will get pulled.

Also, I would not send this buggy through the mail. It is worth too much money to get ruined by Parcelforce and for the buyer to demand their money back and for me to have to try and put a claim through, it is not just about a buggy, what abouta fridge, freezer, washing machine, 3 peice suite - these cannot be put through the post yet people HAVE to offer Paypal on their items.

Sure you can quote the cash on collection button but if you refuse Paypal and then the person buying it refuses to pay it leaves the seller to chase up the fees.

I will email a reponse to eBay tomorrow when I have thought about this and the correct way to ask the questions I need to. Again, if anyone has a direct question they want me to add then please ask and I will get these answered too.

I'm thinking of adding the following provisio to my listings that are pick up.

"When paying by PayPal for collection-only items, for your protection, please remember to bring photo ID and a recent utility bill with your name and address. We also require a copy of your fingerprints - this is for your and our protection. Thank you for your understanding."

A friend on the force suggest we get people's fingerprints and a copy of their photo ID so if they try to do a false "item not received", we have proof to the contrary. Makes it so much easier getting a conviction and restitution.
"Money is truthful. If a person speaks of their honour, make sure they pay in cash."

That may stand up in court if you were to take it that far, but if you don't have online proof of delivery, then the buyer gets a refund.

It's Paypals T&C's - we can discuss all the possibilities 'til we are blue in the face (or blue in the monkey!!) but we've all agreed to those T&C's and any action we take will be governed by them in the first instance.

Our only concern is to protect our bottom line against PayPal scammers. We want a copy of buyer's photo ID and fingerprints so the Police can make their case against these scammers by finding their real ID by matching the fingerprints and/or photo ID. Photo ID can be faked, but it's difficult to change your appearance (as shown on ID) and fingerprints.

We also use physical ID as proof of sale in any Small Claims Court action (if needed) against the scammer with PayPal as co-respondant. It's worked for us in the past. :-)

Absolutely correct.......but....is 'online proof of delivery' defined? I'm asking because I don't know - despite being an ebay seller for 8 years with +ve feedback of 1800+! - and I can't be bothered to read through the T&Cs.

If it ISN'T defined....then this perceived problem of being scammed after an item is collected in person, is easily overcome.

    Anyone?
If in doubt - do something. (With fond memories of Harry Chapin)

    Yes it's defined:

What methods of online tracking are acceptable?

Question : Answer : help_a.gif</IMG> The following options may be used:
    • Parcelforce Worldwide
    • Royal Mail - Special Delivery
    • Royal Mail - Recorded Signed For
    • Royal Mail - International Signed For
    • Royal Mail - Airsure
    • UPS
    • FedEx
    • Airborne Express
    • DHL
Note: Royal Mail does not officially provide online tracking (with proof of delivery) for the International Signed For service. In some instances however, delivery details may be available online. If these details map to the buyer's postal address shown on the Transaction Details page, PayPal may consider it as sufficient proof of delivery. However, since availability of delivery details cannot be predicted, sellers may not be able to rely on this method for proof of delivery in order to be covered by PayPal's Seller Protection Policy.

On another thread recently one of the regulars posted a new ruling about items over a certain amount needing a signature available online, I can't find a link at the moment but it basically mean that this further narrowed down the options to ONLY Royal mail Special delivery.

Hi everyone, I was going to post on this last night but ran out of time.

Over the last few days I have listed a couple of items WITHOUT Paypal being offered!!

Via Auctiva I chose 'Local Collection Only' and 'other payment options' however, I tried to upload and it specified that I had to choose Cheque or MO (which I guess is money order? Postal Order?) So I added the option for cheque and have added to the description that if payment is sent by cheque then it needs to be cleared before the goods are collected.

    And it uploaded them.

So, they have either changed their software and not told anyone for fear of losing face or it has not come in yet. I listed these items on Sunday night and it was in different catagories as I have more than one so who knows.

You know, adding your own t&cs to the auction description is a good idea. Yes, it means nothing at the end of the day (like 'I am not responsible for items lost in the post, claim for stuff yourself') BUT it might put off potential scammers. Or highlight them to you. As people have said, if you ask nicely, normal buyers have no problem paying in cash. And if they need to use their credit card then there will be a nicely apologetic email to that effect. Whereas scammers might take the 'you offered PP so I will pay via that' line, so you can protect yourself by not dealing with them. You might get an NPS but worth it when there's big money at stake.

    How's that?
If you HAVE to offer collection only of course. As a buyer I would offer to pay cash if people not offering collection lived next door. Even if the option was not highlighted on their delivery details. So everyone is happy. Ish.
