The classified ad format is just the same as your local newspaper. All deals are done outside of ebay, you just pay to list. The problem at the moment is lack of catogories.

Classifieds cost about £10 to run for 30 days, but the transaction takes place outside of ebay, therefore any payment method can be used.

Not sure if it would be a cost effective method for one off items, but may be good for somebody selling garden furniture and the likes of that, but classifieds are only available in certain categories at the moment.

The way round Paypal and collection is to get the address of your buyer and post by recorded delivery their receipt. Then you have tracking and signature available to you. But it will cost £1, and PayPal fees.......

I remember reading ages ago when they set up eBay express that theyw ere trying to lure in the biggies like PC World to sell on there - like they would be interested in paying those fees! That did not work and they seem to think they are some sort of business site and stuff the 'little people'.

The problem with being a business only platform is twofold:

1 A large business will already have it's own website.

2 A large business will not be happy being told how to run their business (paypay returns etc), and won't want visible negative comments (feedback).

Given that we are about to go into a recession, and the public will want to offload excess belongings to raise cash, and pick up used bargians to save money, ebay's business only strategy (if that's what they really have) seems to be very badly timed.

It's worrying that Dave and Soolin are having very similar opinions recently - poacher & gamekeeper working together...!!

I know, I had to go and have a fortyfying glass of sherry and a lie down :rotfl:

Seriously though I am really worried about this paypal on collection malarky especially as the pinks on the ebay forums consistently deny there is any problem at all.

but for the OP selling one item that doesn't amount to much.

Just setup a new account for the purpose of selling the item.

The OP in this case has one of the highest positive feedback scores I have ever seen, I don't think they would want to risk setting up a new account and running the risk of that getting suspended which of course would then eman they couldn't use their original account.

This was discounted on the ebay forums several weeks back as it was pointed out that if paypal require a scanned copy of the original posting receipt the new receipts show the weight of the item. So being able to show you sent a 50g item is hardly going to prove that buyer received a 30 kg bed, it would just make the seller look a bit scammy.

But Dave, this is Ebay, Ebay is king, they rule the world and everyone is going to want to sell on eBay and give them a share of their profits..... aren't they??

Yes, I thought about this but what if the buyer knows it is coming and then refuses it at the door?

I would have thought that wouldn't be any good if you were selling something large. As the postage costs would show it was only a letter that had been sent.
Thanks for any help and advice given

Wouldn't it be possible to offer and accept a 'deposit' by paypal - therefore a £100 sale is split ... 10% deposit by paypal [£10] and the rest[£90] cash on collection.
If they are a dodgy buyer surely they could only claim a chargeback of £10?

Or am I missing something in the rule change.
Learn to laugh at yourself ... everyone else has:rotfl:
