The problem with most of these ideas is though that the invoice will go out with paypal enabled so you either have to accept it if selller pays or run the risk of a non performing seller complaint. The alternative is to sit by the PC and wait for the auction to end and try and get an email out to the buyer before they can pay. That is of course time consuming and still runs the risk of getting you a non performing seller complaint.

Putting any note in the auction beforehand will just get you suspended as other sellers will report you.

  • can you not offer to post but charge as much as you can possibly justify for postage costs, which will put buyers off the postage option. offer paypal for posted items and cash on collection for collected items.
  • I don't usually allow collection in person - I don't like strangers coming to my house. I did once offer it for something really heavy and, in advance of the buyer coming to collect, I sent a receipt and directions to my house via Royal Mail guaranteed post. This gave me a tracking number but it cost me £4.30. It's the only way I can think of to guard against unfair charge-backs.

Ebay is shooting itself in the foot though. I've been selling on ebay since 2001 and I'm very savvy and know about all the scams - otherwise I really wouldn't continue using it. If anyone was just starting out today I would tell them not to bother. Too many scams.

Wouldn't it be possible to offer and accept a 'deposit' by paypal - therefore a £100 sale is split ... 10% deposit by paypal [£10] and the rest[£90] cash on collection.
If they are a dodgy buyer surely they could only claim a chargeback of £10?

Or am I missing something in the rule change.

Receiving split payments are technically forbidden by paypal, but again this is for seller protection, rather than buyers'.

As for the other comment about a huge postage rate, there will always be one numpty that will pay it!

The risk is that someone pays, then marks you down for postage and you find yourself suspended.

Ah yes, the old 'bottom 5% of sellers' rule again, most sellers are desperately trying to keep their stars above 4.5.

Ebay Australia which is now Paypal only, accepts cash on delivery/collection as a payment option.

I've had people collecting pay by Paypal, never had one complaint when I refunded and asked them to pay cash.

You could offer a discount for cash on collection equal too or a little over the paypal fee. If a buyer still insisted on paying by paypal then I would be suspicious they are trying to scam me.

Personally I don't see what the big issue is. Yes it's not ideal but if one applies some common sense then the problem is easily averted and all it requires is a large notice across your listing stating that collections (and/or local delivery) can only be by cash. Regardless of all the nay-sayers saying it won't work and Ebay will shut you down/ban you etc  it has worked fine for me for years and 80% of my items are sold either for collection only or local delivery for a small charge due to the size and weight of them.

I've had a handful of people pay by Paypal "automatically" without realising their mistake but after explaining the possible scam that could result from it every one of them has been perfectly happy for me to refund them and them pay in cash as originally stated.

A similar "warning" notice is also displayed for the potential overseas bidders of my other items stating that if the item is for delivery to an overseas address then payment can only be by IBAN bank transfer (as Paypal are once again useless in covering you in the overseas department too  ). However, that discussion is not for this thread..

Surely though what payment method you accept is up to you even though your auction may say differently? I recently had an item for sale and pointed out in my listing that although ebay expected me to accept paypal I would not accept it for a collection item and it was cash only.

It might have been wrong but my auction wasn't pulled and noone questioned me. If you have decent feedback, surely a buyer will understand where you're coming from and be happy to accept a cash only sale?
