Collection in person - apparently we now HAVE to offer Paypal!!!

In response to this expressed concern:-
... apparently I have to offer Paypal on all eBay listings. This is open to huge abuse if some collects something from you and then pays via Paypal and claims it has not been collected...
I would add that an alternative concern is the possibility that if an item was prepaid by PayPal prior to collection, how could it be proved that the item had not already been collected (if the seller chose to say it had been collected), and what if the item was actually damaged.
One possible solution would be for both parties to use Ebay's email service to agree the date, time, and place of collection (hopefully the seller's address as notified to Ebay), and the following process, prior to payment by PayPal.
The buyer to print off 2 copies of the item description after s/he had won and paid for the item by PayPal, which shows the buyer has won and paid for the item. Such a document can only be available to the buyer after his/her security codes have been entered. The copies could then be taken when collecting the item, both of which could be signed by both parties, and a copy held by both.
This would ensure the seller could be satisfied the legitimate buyer had arrived to collect the item, and could have written confirmation that the buyer was satisfied with the item. In addition the buyer could have more confidence that the the seller was legitimate, and the item was available and satisfactory before signing the document. Obviously any other details could be agreed to be added to the document, as required, at the email stage.
I don't know whether such a process would satisfy PayPal, but it could be checkable by Ebay, and might help to overcome some existing concerns.
Better still, if such a process could be agreed in principle by email prior to the end of the auction, both parties might feel less anxious, and/or receive an indication about the other party's willingness to be checked.
Hope its of some use.0 -
Forgive me if I appear stupid with this post, but I have only sold a few items on Ebay so far.
I was going to list a few larger items on Thursday for cash on collection only.
I was just going to "untick" the Paypal payment option and "tick" other for cash.
Can I not do this now?
Sorry if this is a dumb question.
Thanks.Ageing is a privilege not everyone gets.

Succint and to the point thank you custardy. I am, as you know, very concerned that people still do not understand the online tracking requirements for accepting paypal.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Clutterfree, you also have to offer cheque or postal order as payment. Try and untick the box, if you cannot list it then it will tell you. It would not let me and asked me to add cheque or MO so I did and said I would wait for clearance first in the descripion and it let me list it as local pick up only.
However, I received an email last week that told me that Paypal HAD to be offered on ALL listings except motors. So either it has not been implemented yet - or eBay have backed down and kept it very quiet as they have realised that the idea was totally crap..... Hmmmmmm.....0 -

It hasn't been implemented yet for existing sellers, it currently only applies to new sellers. An existing seller shoul dbe able to remove the paypal option and just offer 'local colelction only' which does not require a payment method at all so you just add 'cash on collection' to your auction description. Anyway, there isn't an option for cash otherwise so nothing to tick.
New sellers however will not be allowed to actually place the listing unless paypal is ticked, and there is no way round it. The easiest way of finding out how 'new' ebay considers you to be is to try listing an item without paypal..if it lets you then go ahead while you can.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Not sure if I'm looking at this in too simple a light, or maybe I'm just too simple.
If you have a large item to sell, then a listing which includes a fair delivery charge, with a trackable postal or courier price applicable to the item ( it's not too difficult to source a price) should sort out the genuine buyers who choose to pay via PayPal. They accept the extra costs involved (which give both buyer and seller protection)
Yes I know they can claim item not as described but the buyer is then responsible for the return costs., plus actually getting the item sent off. Lots of good photographs and a good description would help to prevent those sort of claims.
If the listing also includes local pickup/delivery option with cash payment , then both seller and buyer are happy.0 -
So how many bids would you expect on a 10 year old TV worth maybe £25, but with P&P of £50?
The point is that many items listed as collection only are not worth enough to warrant postage, or sellers do not want to go to the time and effort of finding suitable packaging, arranging a courier and hanging around all day for the courier to pick the item up.
It's a blatant oversight on the "paypal across the board" policy - surely it would be simple to programme in a change whereby Paypal is not needed and no postage options are displayed if the "pick-up only" box is ticked.<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -

That's the point I'm making!
If it's a good item, it will still sell with local pick up and cash on collection, just as items do now.
If it's something special and a buyer desperately wants it, they will pay for delivery.
How many sellers have lost sales because they only offered cash on collection?
Probably quite a few, but that was their choice.
I recently sold a few items which were offered in this way, some were collected and others the buyer payed for trackable mode of delivery.
No complaints yet and good feedback.0 -
Psuedo, it is like this.
You had a 3 piece suite to sell and put it on eBay as local collection only as delivery would be extortionate. It sells for £500. You have to offer Paypal so your buyer pays via Paypal.
So, your buyer sends the money to you via Paypal then comes to your home and collects the sofa.
They can then come home, log onto Paypal and file 'item not received' dispute. Paypal will put your £500 on hold.
Hold on you say, the buyer has collected it, it is too big for courier delivery, it is a suite so he came to my home.
Paypal system will say 'please provide a tracking number' you say 'it was collected I do not have one'.
Paypal says without a tracking number then the buyer gets the money back. It will take it from your account and give it back to them.
You are then without your suite and your £500. They can do this anytime in 45 days. The money could be spent, your bank account empty. Paypal will get a debt collection agency onto you to recover the money.
With no proof of delivery and with people being allowed to pay via Paypal then it will become a scammers paradise!! Much as I would love to think that not everyone is like this, the seller will not even be allowed to leave feedback saying 'sellers beware, paid by Paypal collected and then claimed not received'.
It's it fab!! If I was a bit dodgy the I could completely furnish my house for free with lots of nice stuff from the people who do not realise the implication of accepting Paypal for goods collected......
Watch these board fill up over the next 6 months. I've been scammed, buyer collected and then told Paypal it has not been received. People need to be warned about this!!
I think I am going to email Watchdog so they can make people aware.
Thanks for the message earlier soo, so it has not been implimented yet - better get listing ASAP then!!0
