Collection in person - apparently we now HAVE to offer Paypal!!!

Surely though what payment method you accept is up to you even though your auction may say differently? I recently had an item for sale and pointed out in my listing that although ebay expected me to accept paypal I would not accept it for a collection item and it was cash only.
It might have been wrong but my auction wasn't pulled and noone questioned me. If you have decent feedback, surely a buyer will understand where you're coming from and be happy to accept a cash only sale?

The problem you have is that you could get reported by a competitor or a stroppy customer.
And then you risk falling foul of the 5% gestapo..."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

Morning everything, I have a hosp appointment so I do't have time ti dig everything out but I had a response. If you want me to ask any other questions relating to this then fire away and I will add them to my email back to them (PS. I asked for them NOT to send me one of their standard automated emails!!):
Hello X,
Thank you for contacting us regarding this urgent matter, my name is
XX and I'm happy to assist you with this.
I have read your email thoroughly and as an eBayer myself, I can really
understand your concern. X, as you are a little confused with eBays
new policy updates, I would like to take the time to clarify a few
things for you. First of all, it is not efficient to send a child
stroller in the mail and eBay understand this, that is why we still
allow sellers to offer goods for collection. Since you will be offering
the goods for collection, I would strongly advise you to ask for cash on
collection, as this is still a valid payment method for on-collection
goods only. As I understand you are very worried about a buyer falsely
claiming through PayPal, however, when you offer cash on collection, you
will therefore not be open to any fraudulent claims through PayPal and
this would also save you and the buyer to be alot of time.
Thank you for your cooperation. We look forward to your response so that
we can resolve this matter as soon as possible.
Kind regards,
I guess one of the questions will be, what if someone wants to pay for it by Paypal and I reject the payment. What happens then?? The point being that your buyer might not have the 'cash' but want to use a credit card.
Hey, just an after thought, with all the credit and debt problems and eBay/Paypal consortium want to ensure as many people are able to pay for everything with Credit Cards. Nice!0 -
Well, blue_monkey, having read through this I think the answer is that eBay should do a software tweak to allow the following:
There should be an additional "collection ONLY" option when the seller lists such an item which, when ticked by the seller, automatically DESELECTS PayPal as a payment option.
This removes all chance of a seller risking being scammed by a nasty buyer playing the system.
For those sellers who with items which could be couriered etc if the buyer requires, or collected in person if the seller is happy with that, the current "collection in person" OPTION can remain as is, with PayPal etc. In these cases, the seller will have to bear in mind the caveat which exists with a PayPal payment if their buyer wishes to collect and agree alternative payment options as appropriate. Or as stated above, simply detail these options in the listing.

I am thoroughly confused now as blue-monkeys email directly contradicts the pinks on the ebay forum and the upcoming ebay rules. The system in future will NOT allow us to list without paypal, newer users have already discovered that if thy don't list paypal as a payment method they physically can't list their item. Also the pinks have stated over and over again that refusing to accept paypal even on a collected item will be in breach of the rules.
Once again one bit of ebay completely misunderstands what the other bit is doing.
I think we should all ask and if we get the same email as blue_monkey keep it somewhere safe with all the headings and then list our collectable items with the statement that if collected cash on colelction MUST be used and any paypal payment will be returned. Then if our auctions get pulled or we get any complaints we refer to the email and say that we are acting entirely on advice given.
The only problem might be that the rules about paypal have not come in yet for most sellers, so maybe hold off asking the question until the rules are in so we can prove we were given the advice after that date.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. This isn't true at all.
I just sold one. Dropped it off at the post office, postage was £11 by ebay's own partnership with parcelforce for up to 30kg of weight. There aren't any that weigh more than about 15kg.0 -
Geez you folks really know how to make a huge drama out of nothing.
Stroll on.

Firstly it would require Ebay and Paypal to do something that will reduce their earnings via Paypal. Ebay want Paypal used where possible. They do not normally act against their own interests.

PS, I know that those two flaws are one and the same flaw, but it is so important that I thought it worth mentioning twice. (Red Dwarf fans will understand this)

Point 1 Avoriaz, I completely agree. Ebay are not going to spend any time working through a system to exclude the only logical time that paypal should not be used. It wouldn't be a simple fix as people would only try and bend the rules and use the collection button to avoid using paypal even when item is actually posted. The pinks on the forum are quite adamant that this is not a problem and there will therefore be no exclusions (stupid I know but there you go what do you expect from ebay ?

Have the buyer sign saying that the item is collected as described and in good working condition. If they do not sign, do not give them the item.
We have a lot of collections from here and that is our procedure for them all, and it rarely goes wrong.0 -

If you read the rest of the thread you will see why this is a bad idea and will not work.
Also have you seen the paypal requirements for online tracking for items? If not I would strongly urge you to read the terms and conditions you signed up for when you agreed to use paypal as you will then see why this paypal on colelcted items is going to be a nightmare.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
