you're lucky, I applied to Toucan for line rental and it appears they aren't taking anymore customers from it.plc they said I will have to apply to BT to activate the line, which means I'm then tied to BT for 12 months.

Well Geoff, I hate to say it but it really is your own fault as you chose to leave everything to the last minute, you could have abandoned ship ages ago when you had the chance! There were plenty of warnings and good advice in this thread about what might happen if you did nothing and stayed with IT. But as Heinz has suggested, you can always use short access codes for calls, so even your £2 or £3 monthly spend could be cut in half. :-)

Do BT have some sort of "possession" of these lines?

If not, you can use other operators (eg. post office or the phone co-op) to activate them.

They don't have 12 month contracts (post office only require 15 days notice to quit), so if you have your hearts set on Toucan, this would be a way round the problem.

I migrated to Toucan almost a month ago.
    • Override codes work fine
    • £40 credit on the account
    • Online paperless billing
    • Pay £8.99 a month by direct debit
    Happy days!

My activation date was 27th May. They were bang on time and we have £35 credit on the account. The only problem was that we were no longer "caller ID withheld". I dropped them a quick e-mail, which they responded to the same day promising that this would be corrected within five working days. Three days later this too had been activated..

£8.99 per month and fantastic customer service. Happy days indeed!

    Hi Geoff,

When I originally spoke to Toucan, they explained that they buy blocks of lines from BT. It looks as though they have been inundated by itplc refugees and exhausted their allocation. It will probably be only a matter of time before they have another supply of lines and be able to port your number. It might be advisable to shop around for a short term option.

Normally they just take the line rental over as an when required. Its possible they are now adopting the policy of their sister company Tiscali and only taking lines over that are currently with BT proper, despite the fact they could take them over from any non cable supplier, or provide them thereselves, if they really wanted to.

Why would they be selective and turn away valuable business?

Surely they are in the business to make money and would snap up any opportunity to do so that came their way. Unless of course they didn't have the line capacity.

I have never had the pleasure of using Tiscali as our two existing broad-bands are trouble free.

Because it cheaper for them to do this, and thats their parent companies policy.I am only suggesting it might have been extended to Toucan.;)

Capacity does not come into it unless they are unbundling the service, they just take over a BT Line and bill the customer for it,they dont need any line capacity of their own in an exchange to do this.

I don't understand your calculations. Please explain?
  • Has anyone had a demand from Optima Legal for monies owed to ITPLC.
If so what do you intend to do?
Counterclaim for Loss of servoce without warning?

Regarding Finarea - don't know whether what you say about them is correct, (and wouldn't argue with you).

But from a moneysaving point of view they are fantastic - no other company gives us free phone calls 24/7!

And the same goes for ITPlc - whatever their "legality", they operated here for some years, giving their customers a much cheaper deal than elsewhere.

So the lesson surely is, don't be concerned about the "legality" of an operation if it saves you some money! (Unless you like being a jobsworth!).
