Are you sure Toucan allow access to short codes like 1899 etc? A lot of landline suppliers block them.

First of all you still don't say what trouble you have had with toucan? Secondly if you look in the "ask toucan" section on their website the question about using access codes for other providers is asked and clearly answered as "YES", so not sure where you are getting this incorrect information?

    From their "ask toucan" section:-
"Can I still use another provider from my phone?
You can always use a prefix code from another company — but with ToucanTalk rates this low, you won't need to!"

Their Customer Service is not rated highly.

Had a look at the website from the link you posted and this only refers to their broadband service with no mention of their phone service, although admittedly this is not a good reference or history for any company. But having read some recent online reviews for their talk only services it appears they have made some improvements (from what other customers are saying) and I am prepared to give them a go.
BT doesn't exactly have a good reputation either, but the majority of people still choose to stick with them, so I guess I am one of those people that likes to try out alternatives. We take a risk every time we try out a new ISP for broadband services but it does not stop us changing providers. I just want the cheapest line rental possible and from all current research on the net that is what I am getting!

As my line,via1280 and broadband are still OK I think I will wait for the final bill from it plc to see what they suggest we do,who knows, someone may take over.
Re Blue Telecom, it appears they are for business customers only. Although if they are ringing up it plc customers (not me yet) perhaps they are taking over?
I have rang Toucan (line rental £8.99 inc VAT) they say it takes 10 days to transfer.
    Any body got anymore suggestions?

Next cheapest line rental appears to be Post Office 9.95p a month includes evening and weekend 01/02 calls, with no long contract.

Its just BT rebranded, and apparently they have just started to use another outsourced customer service centre which came be a little flaky.

I have been forwarded to this post by utilitybroker, as I too am considering toucan, for very ow call users they seem the best option? Dont need the line for broadband as I have a dongle so I had considered getting rid of the line but then its costly for others to call so just need a land line for this.

Judging by the problems I have had with BT and the slating it gets here surely toucan cant be any worse?
