The letter thing probably refers to BT writing saying, "Sorry you're leaving" (although, of course, you're only leaving for some calls).

AFAIK, that sort of warning pops up occasionally when a site has forgotten to renew its certificate (I don't get it on Primus's site though).

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thanks Heinz, just used your link & there was no warning! Just had a bit of a panic after giving them our bank details! He mentioned cheeky letter after mentioning about BT writing! So, who knows!

I just loged in OK from Martins newsletter link:

Took a look at my bills while I was there:

    I feel a little embarrassed. :)

    Thanks for previous replies.

How do you switch between suppliers then? I thought it said on the Primus site that you don't have to put any codes in or anything.

I'd want to use BT during the day and Primus on evenings?

    TIA

I hope you mean use 18185 during the day and Primus CPS evenings and weekends (for 01, 02, 03 calls anyway).

CPS means that, although you keep your BT landline, pay 'line rental' to BT (the Unlimited Weekend Plan - formerly BT Together Option 1 is the minimum) and your incoming calls still arrive on BT (so Caller Display, 1471* and 1571* work normally), you will have opted to have the BT exchange programmed so that, by default, (nearly) all your outgoing calls are sent via the CPS provider (and BT don't even 'see' the calls even though they carry the first leg).

The 'default' part of that sentence is the key to CPS. It means that, if you want, you can use a prefix to send an individual call via another provider (i.e. override the CPS programming for a single call). For example, using just a 1280 prefix will send that call out via BT, using just a 18185 prefix (not 128018185) will send that call out via www.18185.co.uk and so on.

In other words, CPS allows you still to pick the best carrier for your calls even though you've opted, normally, to use one provider (e.g. Primus Saver Option 2 because of the free evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls).

If you don't have to make many weekday daytime UK 01/02 calls (and the few that you do make are made for 5p each, regardless of duration, using 18185), it reduces your call costs to almost nothing.

    * Don't dial 3 after checking who called on 1471 or dial 0 after checking a 1571 message (even though that nice BT lady's voice invites you to do so and it seems like the easy way to return the call). If your do, BT will charge you 7½p regardless of whether the call is connected or not.

Please have a read of my '6-steps' to reducing costs for BT residential landline subscribers too.

I have 1471 blocked here on the orchid, but I do have a button called 1471 on the phone that overides the block for when I want to use it.

But I never follow it by press number 3.

    Thanks Heinz.

Have just read through your detailed info on the other thread and I think the Sky one is the best for us, as we already have the free Sky broadband and TV, which there's no way we'd be giving up (sports fanatics in this household) and sounds a lot simpler than remembering to put different codes in first.

TBH we'd rarely make daytime calls as both of us are at work in the day, but just wondered how you swapped between the two, so very useful thank you :A

I saw this mentioned by Martin the other night on his programme (first time I've seen that (and him) and he must lose about 3000 calories per show the amount he moves about :D ).

I think I'll give the Primus thing a whirl. I really don't make that many [1899] calls at the moment but it's still a few pounds in my pocket hopefully.

    Thanks.
