Orchid Dialler Discount

This is a new thread about Orchid Dialler to replace the old thread.

Orchid Dialler boxes are something i already recommend in my Cheapest Home Phones article. Effectively it allows you to pre-programme the box so calls are automatically put the choosen provider. Especially useful for those using override providers such as 18185 and other numbers in combination.

Anyway as the email below details as many of their custom comes from this site - they're offering a discount. (obviously there is no financial link between MSE and Orchid)

I bought one recently and it's excellent, just updated settings today as per Heinz advice.

It looks complicated at first but it's easy once you know and there are plenty of willing people here to help.

But you can also get Orchid to do it all for you and their customer service is great.

By now you will be thinking I work for them but I don't and never have I don't work for anyone.

For quite some time I wondered how people managed to use all these different providers until I came here and found the Orchid dialler page and never looked back, it has saved me £60 in three months if not more.

[STRIKE]Prices have changed slightly since the original (December 2004) thread and, as at 22 October 2008, they are now:
V2 (single carrier) £10.99 (£8.79 after MSE discount);
[/STRIKE]Orchid sold off their remaining stock of the original version of the V2 during 2009.
[STRIKE]V4 (multiple carrier) £15.99 (£12.79 after MSE discount);
[/STRIKE]Orchid sold off their remaining stock during 2009 and new V4s are no longer available.
[STRIKE]V4+ (multiple carrier + backup power souce) £20.99 (£17.79 after MSE discount).

[STRIKE] Most people find the standard V4 adequate for their needs.

I have just learned that Toby Clarke, formerly of Orchid Telecom, moved from the UK to a position with an Australian telco in late 2009. Disappointingly (in the past, Orchid's communications and customer service were always excellent), he did not make contact with me before moving.

Orchid Telecom Limited of Ridlington Park House, Holygate Road, Ridlington, LE15 9AR has set up an auto-divert so that those attempting to visit the former www.orchid-telecom.com webite reach http://www.smallbusinesstelephonesystemsuk.co.uk/ instead. The firm no longer deals in low cost routers (diallers) and, as the name of their new website suggests, specialises in telecoms equipment for small businesses.

I have been unable to locate a UK vendor of the old Orchid V2 or, more importantly, the V4 or V4+ diallers [STRIKE]but have located a firm selling the Orchid Bill Saver dialler briefly marketed in 2009 by Orchid Telecom. That is Tod Designs of Unit 2A, Colyton Business Park, Wheelers Yard, COLYTON, Devon EX24 6DT (http://toddesigns.co.uk/acatalog/lcr_dialer.html).

Unfortunately, the Bill Saver appears only to be similar in functionality to the old V2 dialler (i.e. it lacks the time/day/date capabilities of the V4/V4+) and the selling price is £18.80 including 17.5% VAT.[/STRIKE]

FURTHER UPDATE 17 MARCH 2010

In reply to a, "Can end-users program Bill Saver LCRs themselves?" email, Tod Designs have now advised that they have sold out and have been unable to obtain further supplies (I think they just bought the remaining stock from Orchid and sold them on) and, therefore, have reluctantly removed it from their website (hence the struckthrough text above).

It looks like the value of my spare V4 LCRs is increasing exponentially!

Hi Everyone,
Regarding cheep phone calls does anyone know about the BT 18866, that a very Dear Friend Recommended. He did check it out and said it is fine, but I don't know if there have been any problems. I am quite Happy to go with this company but I need a little bit moe information about it before I diside fully.

Welcome to the MSE forums adelabusybee

18866 (and its sister companies 1899 and 18185) are 'legit' as you put it. They operate online only accounting and limited Customer Service online too.

I have an Orchid dialler which I've been using successfully for many months on a BT line and using the Hertz programme. I am thinking of transferring my line to Tiscali to take up their included broadband deal. Will the Orchid dialler still function on a Tiscali line to allow the overriding of weekday calls through to 1899, Primus etc. and, if so, will I then have to modify the Hertz settings myself or is there another Orchid programme that I could then use.

If you transfer your line rental to Tiscali, you won't be able to use Primus or any other CPS calls provider (only BT has to allow that).

Similarly, you won't be able to use the 1280 prefix to 'hop back onto BT' for calls for which BT is cheaper (you will no longer have a BT account so there's no way they could recover the call charges from you).

I don't know whether or not Tiscali bars access to the 18185 short code or not (or 1899 and/or 18866) but all line rental providers except BT can do that if they wish.

Am I missing a trick?

I think it's now necessary to phone to order (don't forget to mention the MSE 20% discount).

I could not see a mention of buying online either, so phoned them to order a V4+ dialer. The lady was very helpful. They don't sell the V4+ anymore, so I got V4's instead! They have an offer on - 3 for 2, with the 20% MSE discount.
