  • Hi,
I'm on flext 20 with web'n'walk and contract up in november.
I would like to stay with t-mobile, but would like to get my mits on the new mda vario 3 when it arrives.
I suspect new customers are likely to get the better deals and with this in mind, would the following work in order to keep existing number:
    1) Phone tmobile and ask for PAC code. At same time try and strike a deal for mda vario 3. If that fails, take PAC code and port to another network PAYG.
    2) Take out a 'new' customer deal with tmobile and after 1 month ask PAYG network for pac and port back to new tmobile contract.

    My questions are,

    1) can you do this or would tmobile not allow a number they had recently return so soon?
    2) which is the best PAYG operator to go to in terms of costs for getting pac
    3) PAYG operator that would allow call forwarding to the new tmobile number for 1 month.
    4) If all else fails, is there and alternative network that comes close to web'n'walk???
    5) How soon after taking out a contract with a network can you downgrade the tarriff? If I found a deal that required a high tariff in order to get the phone for a reasonable amount do I have to stick with it for the full 12-18 months?

There are some smart cookies out there that have the answers ;-)
    Thanks in advance!
  • A few pre order deals are begining to come through now on the Vario 3 but the tarriff for a good handset price is a little high.
Any idea how long you would have to stay on the tarriff before you can reduce the tarriff? These deals are not cash back deals.
Any ideas on this or my post above?
Poo! My team have just conceded a goal!

Hi, The phone will have an RRP of £279.99 as an upgrade.

Cost to us dealers £330 + Vat.

Are you on a 12 or 18 mth contract?

On an 18Mth Flext 20 + W&W i would imagine that max discount would be £200, therefore Vario 3 will cost £79.99.

I dont think you will get a better deal as a new customer.

Tariff downgrades are allowed after 11 months for both 12 or 18 month contracts.

I wouldnt bother porting out and porting in, for that phone.

Stick your current phone on Ebay to help towards the £79.99.

Can't wait to get mine in a couple of weeks.:j

I shouldnt see a problem with the 5 days leaway. Explain the situation and say you don't mind extending your contract by an additional 5 days. I have had situations of 2 weeks earlier than upgrade time. ;)

Call 0845 4125000 once you have entered your number, go for option 3, (Upgrade) listen to message, press 0, straight through to retentions..

    Thanks for that. Very informative.
I'm currently coming to the end of a 18 month contract.
If I could get the upgrade on that tarriff for £79 I think I will take it. If I keep my 25% discount, i'll rip their arm off! I would even be prepared to take a 24 month contract for that deal!

You mention 'Us dealers', does that mean you know someone who is going to offer an upgrade on that tarriff for £79? Would you care to reveal? PM if you don't want to publically reveal - or is it t-mobile direct?

What confuses me a little if the £279.99 RRP for upgrade. Is that T-mobiles RRP? Who would offer a further £200 off a upgrade price?

Seen a couple of early reviews coming through now for the TYTN 2 (Vario 3) and they seem very favourable indeed. Have you actually tried one?

As you suggest, old MDA Vario on ebay (and backup P910i) should cover a fair chuck of the upgrade cost at around the £80 - £100 mark.
  • alnsv1000s is implying (s)he is a dealer. I used to be one too - basically dealers are charged much more for the phone than what it is sold for. When the network receives a contract or upgrade, they pay the dealer a chunky commission. If they can sell to you for £80, then the commission must be at least (330-68) = 262 (assuming the VAT was claimed back on the 330, and paid on the 80).

By the way, in my opinion the S730 - if it ever materialises (HTC Wings) will be the one to go for. It's almost normal phone size/weight and has all the good stuff. I wanted a tiny phone in my pocket for day-to-day use so went for the superb (and under-publicised - perhaps to shift other stock?) 6120.

The Vario series, having bought one and sold on, is too chunky for me. But I'm considering getting one as a 'backup' off ebay to take on hols as an email solution (Web'n'walk roaming is £7.50/MB everywhere except a few where it's £3/MB for business users)
The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster! :)

  • My contract ends in 29 days... I did want a N95, but having read and read about it, I'm reconsidering, I'm now thinking of getting a SE k810i, I know the 850i is coming out in a month or so, but I think that if I go for this phone I might be able to negotiate a better deal,

I've been doing a bit of maths, on a £30 18 month contract the network gets £540 revenue,
If a phone (i.e. the N95) costs £480 then how on earth can a network make a profit on this? I doubt they can, which might be why T-Mobile aren't seeming to match the O2 offer, they don't want to get into a price war which will lead to them having to charge more later on!

So, if I go for a phone such as the k810i which costs £230 SIM free, it leaves the network £310, which means I've got a much better chance of getting the bill cut or some other special offer...

Hopefully will be posting again later to give an update of how it went!
  • I'm very glad to have found this thread, as I was just about to accept what the T-mobile website said I was entitled to, upgrade wise.

I'm on Flext 20 + web'n'walk with the 25% lifetime discount that they launched last year. According to their website the phone I wanted (Nokia 6120c) would cost me £69.99, and there was nothing I could do to reduce the line rental OR reduce the line rental by £5 but no new handset.

After getting through to retentions (or the 'loyalty team' as they call it), I had a fairly long conversation, after which eventually I managed to get a very small reduction in line rental (£2.50 per month!) but I did manage to get the handset I wanted for £9.99.

So, bearing in mind I was just about to keep my current contract and pay full whack for the phone, that's a saving of £105 by my calculations.

    Thank you all
  • Okay, I've just been offered either the Sony k810i for £29.99 and keep my current discount (25% off, £22.50 for Flext 30) or take the phone for free and only get £5 a month off, obviously this is the worse of the two offers, just about!

Can I get better or should I give them my £30 for the phone and keep my current discount? Any proven tacts which will get results?

Or should I shift networks? Only problem is I can't find any who offer unlimited Data packages! T-Mobile's is only £7.50 a month...
