If you're willing to have the nokia n82 for 24 months, which as i have stated I believe is possible because it is amazing and future proof (up to 24m), then because of the naturally lower line rental - this compromise will save you a lot of money.
i.e. after an 18m contract, even with retention deals, signing a new contract with a new phone will be at roughly the same line rental. So over a 24m period (18m contract, followed by 6 months of a new contract):
    a £25p/m tariff will cost £25x24=£600

While on a 24m contract making the compromise of holding off another 6m for a new phone, which the nokia n82 i think can pull off,
    a £20p/m tariff will cost £20x24=£480.

the n82 right now with n95-8gb have the leading features in regards to top of the range market but in 6 months time when sony release their main models for the year it'll no longer be at the very top or nokia themselves more likely will have released something even better.. i.e. 7.2 megapix camera 16gb storage better wifi range better video etc etc.. in 24 months time a n82 will be the going rate for a pay as you go phone. i guarantee you in 1 year time the n82 will definitely not still be up there with the rest of the market and would be in at least 6th or 7th place mainly due to nokia outdoing themselves and probably taking the first 3 spots with sony and samsung or LG taking 4th 5th and 6th spot.

24 months for a upgrade tariff is absolutely nuts unless you really don't care what kind of phone your stuck with. in that time you could have 2 top of the range phones if you were on 12 months with an additional cost not more than what you 'should' be paying.

i'd never opt for a 18 or 24 month contract.. i think it's scandalous over the past few years how the mobile operators are finding different ways to weasel us out of our money and tying us down longer than we should. really ofcom should get involved once again and make it clear that anything longer than a 12 month contract is not acceptable.. that way the mobile operators can't have us over a barrel with a gun in regards to mixing up better offers with longer contracts. if they want to keep our business away from a competitor you'll be seeing great offers only on 12 month contracts.. (unless of course they decide to do some colluding and price fixing.. but they wouldn't do that now would they? ;) haha)

i'm really curious to know if anyone has managed to stay on their tariff from the previous year and get the existing customer discounted line rental with a new nokia n95-8gb for free or under £100 on 12 month contract?

are they still doing this £15 off line rental discount to upgrade customers on your current tariff or do they only offer it on new tariffs you have to change to??

Have a look over here mate, if you havent already.. an o2 Nokia N95 8gb thread..
    45 pages to go through..

Petey, i agree, 18 months is a long contract.. but my N80 was/is good, has wifi, 3.2mp camera and is still up there compaired to new phones being released. Line rental discount was good, ( i had £20 off these past 18 months)

Maybe worth having a look here:
New o2 tariff's Feb 1st.. I was going to wait to see what they could offer me then, but i took the deal they gave me.

    http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=163062

the thing is with the n80 it was the first phone with 3.2 megapix camera but it didn't have a carl zeiss lens from what i remember or autofocus and the wifi was a bit unreliable. compared to the rest of the market it's pretty low down comparitively to other 3.2 megapix cam phones and above. it seems the going rate right now is 3.2megapix camphones as a rock bottom level.. and anything above typically the n series are leading the markets. what i dont understand is how come the tariffs they offer upgrade customers to are exactly the same as new customers??

what happened to the good old days where there were special tariffs for existing customers for their loyalty.. i mean looking at the offers right now why would i need unlimited texts or 1000 texts?? more mins i could understand but this free o2 to o2 calls thing is such a rip off from 12 months ago when they had o2 long weekends where it was unlimited calls to ANY networks from saturday to monday.

you can see every year they're increasing the line rental by £5 and raising the bar as to what is the average line rental.. i remember a few years ago for a 12 month contract and £25 a month you could get 200mins and 200 texts.. now that's impossible you'd barely get 50 mins and it seems like the going line rental rate has gone up from £25 to £30 to £35 to £40 now! i'm sure there must be some price fixing and colluding going on from all 4 big networks it's just done in a more subtle manner.

i really hope i can get a good deal on what i'm looking for but even i can see that it's going to be unlikely cos the n95-8gb and n series in general really hold their value TOO well.

The N80 is far superior in features to some current o2 contract phones, Samsung D900, Nokia 6500 classic ,and Nokia 6300 to name just a few - so it has held its value.

Yep, it also depends on your monthly spend AND who you speak to.. and these days, unfortunately 18 month contracts are the norm... let us know how you get on, but IMHO you'd be very lucky to get a free n95 8gb paying £25-35 a month for 12 months

    Re: Nokia N95 8GB

Has anyone managed to get a better renewal deal for this phone than the following:

    18 month contract
    £25 a month
    Phone cost: £50
    800 anytime mins
    1000 texts

(I don't actually need so many mins and texts, but apparently it doesn't make much difference to the monthly price if you want less).

I'm really after a £20 a month deal - I don't want to pay more than that, particularly as its 18 months. I don't want to pay for the phone either if it can be helped! Last year I was told I wouldn't get the N73 for free, but on the fourth call I did!

    Hi.

    I called twice.......requesting my PAC code.....and on the second call got offered the following;

£25 a month (fixed for 9 months....then afterward said I can reduce the amount to tariff depending on my needs)
    800 Anytime mins
    1000 Texts
    O2 to O2 calls free
    1MB Data
    Free NokiaN95 Black 8gb

and I pushed for a 12 month contract but had exhausted all my options.......and had to accept the 18 month deal.

    My first offer was

    Free LG Viewty
    600 minutes
    800 Txts
    Unlimited Internet (fair usuage)
    O2 to o2 Calls
    18 months

    Costing £27.50 per month.

I accepted the Nokia N95 offer and am quite happy with it :T:T:T

Good deal.. i was offered the above but for £30 with the n95 8GB but £25 with N82, my last monthly spend was only around £20 p.m inc line rental tho.. BTW what was ur average spend per month during your last contract period with o2.. as it effects what they give you..

this i with the d900 and the other nokia phones they're more mid range phones at best.. the N series are really premium rate phones and very clever marketing on nokias behalf as sony seem to be very rigid in their K or W ranges only rather than making one which is both to compete with nokia.

the thing is i'd be happy to pay say £120 for the handset on a 12 month contract IF i also get £10 off my current line rental for the same duration so in effect i'm getting the handset for free if i just carry on paying my same line rental at its rate, wishful thinking i know but i just wish more people posting would push for 12 month contract options rather than the 18 so i can see what kind of deals they're getting.

the best thing i got offered was the handset for £200 haha.. they must be having a laugh if they think i'm going to pay that on top of my line rental. shame depreciation doesn't affect nokia n series as quickly as sony ericssions top of the range phones. guarantee you in 3 months the w960 is more than likely going to be free on nearly all tariffs on a 12 month contract given what i've seen over the past year.

my wife has finished her contract period with o2.
Not really wanting a new phone, but looking to get a decent allowance.

She gabs a lot, so needs 300-400 min and approx 50 -100 txts.

Anyone have any experience with retentions that they care to sahre?
One day I want to be the pigeon...... and not the statue!
  • Good deal.. i was offered the above but for £30 with the n95 8GB but £25 with N82, my last monthly spend was only around £20 p.m inc line rental tho.. BTW what was ur average spend per month during your last contract period with o2.. as it effects what they give you..

It varies.....My max was £87.66 and £76 but that was following trips to the U.S.
On average about £30-£40 per month.

Regardless, I happy with my haggled deal.
  • Just got off the phone from O2 CPW "loyalty".

After having a bit off a laugh about me stupidly signing up for a 24 month SIM only deal with cashback in November and returning that upgrade, was offered the following:

I wanted the N82 on a £25 tariff but would have to pay £22.99 for the phone, or free on £30 tariff.

I refused and went on the £15 simplicity deal (200 mins, 400, texts, 1 MB Browsing, Free O2 to O2) as he reckoned the N82 would be free on £25 tariffs within 6 weeks, and Simplicity customers can upgrade after 30 days.

Currently on £25 with only 200 texts so £10 less per month for more texts is a bonus.

(I had the choice of free O2 to O2 or free weekends so went for the first option, as already get free calls at weekends on landline.)

Am happy, as refuse point blank to even pay a small amount for a handset when committing to a network for 18 months, and 6 weeks isn't long to wait for one of the best phones around! (IMHO)

Probably didn't get the N82 free on the £25 tariff as my monthly spend is only about £30 -£35. Any one else managed to get the N82 free on £25 tariff or below?
