  • Hi all

First post but I've been browsing for ages. I've just called O2 on 01226 784068. After using Martins tips about mobile deals I was put through to "disconnections" as the original person couldn't beat the Vodafone deal I had been offered.

The "disconnection" dept answered as retention dept and after asking for my PAC code the Vodafone deal was beaten out of sight. I ended up with a Nokia N95 8gb free, 800 mins and 1000 texts for £25 a month. Good deal or what?

    Thanks Martin

Thats a great deal - is it definately the new black N95 8GB or is it the old N95 with a separate 8GB memory card?

    Re: Nokia N95 8GB

Has anyone managed to get a better renewal deal for this phone than the following:

    18 month contract
    £25 a month
    Phone cost: £50
    800 anytime mins
    1000 texts

(I don't actually need so many mins and texts, but apparently it doesn't make much difference to the monthly price if you want less).

I'm really after a £20 a month deal - I don't want to pay more than that, particularly as its 18 months. I don't want to pay for the phone either if it can be helped! Last year I was told I wouldn't get the N73 for free, but on the fourth call I did!

that deal you listed above is actually really good if it was a 12 month contract version. did you ask how much it would be all and for an equivalent deal but on 12 months?

i've been getting silly quotes for the price of the N95-8gb handset for over and upwards of £200.

i presume the 18 month deal for what you got offered is double mins and double texts so normally that would be 400 mins and 500 texts on a 12month contract.. but for £25 a month that actually is still quite good esp if it's £50 for the N95-8gb.. unless of course they're trying to ship you the N95 +8gb card.. which isn't the same thing at all..

also why do they keep writing notes on the system about what you've been offered.. it makes it really difficult to get a good deal when they keep referring to what you were previously offered in the same day. how do you get around this?

the notes on the system of previous offers i've had are making it impossible for me to get a decent deal right now.. i asked about the 800mins 1000 texts offer to which i got no help.

I really don't understand how they say that the system won't 'let' you have anymore discount on the handset or discount on line rental yet they more often than not call you a few hours later if you threaten to leave and take up your PAC code.

Has anyone managed to get a good 12 month offer for the new black n95-8gb for free or for a small amount for £25/month yet?

This what they said. If they send me a N95 with a card then it will be going straight back after I've complained to their Head Office

Do you have any offers on 12 months contracts rather than 18 cos at the end of the day these 18 month contracts aren't great cos they prevent you from upgrading every 12 months and you end up paying 50% extra line rental over a 12month contract.

for instance with your deal at £25 x 12 = £300... but on a 18 month that = £450. so you need to be aware of the deals you're getting aren't as good as they seem.

Has anyone managed to get a deal for 12 months with the new free n95-8gb that's actually good? they seem to be refusing any sort of deal i mention from here saying that it's 'specific' to my account rather than what anyone else is getting.

I was only previously on o2 £15 simplicity when i gave my 30 days notice - was told i was ineligible for any retention deals. I phoned back a couple of days later resigned to the fact that i would have to pay the same as new customers telling them that i wanted the nokia n82. Without any prompting he gave me this deal:

    £30 p/m
    18 month contract
    Free Nokia N82
    600 mins
    1000 texts
o2 Long Weekends ("unlimited" calls to anyone every sat, sun, mon)

But I said I wanted a 24 month contract. Then he gave me this deal:

    £20 p/m
    24 month contract
    Free Nokia N82
    600 mins
    1000 texts
o2 Long Weekends ("unlimited" calls to anyone every sat, sun, mon)

The 24 month contract deal in TOTAL is actually CHEAPER! Do the math: £30x18=£540, £20x24=480. It just seems illogical from their point of view! I guess they get excited by customers stayin longer so offer somethin better but don't realize that in total it is actually less profitable.

Why you might want a Nokia N82 on a 24 month contract:
1.) Nokia give all their phones a 24 month warranty (http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4222229)
2.) As the Nokia N82 is literally just released it will still be a popular sought after phone in 6, 12 and 18 months time (just look at the year old N95)
3.) The Nokia N82 has the latest features and technology; any ground breaking new desirable phone features (e.g. sat nav, sign. camera improvement) will not be in a new phone until at least around the 24 month period.
4.) It has a 5m camera with Xenon (proper) flash: works amazingly day AND night. Wi-Fi for free browsing, net uploading and VOIP calls if wanted. HSDPA (3g+/mobile broadband). Sat Nav. Music, Video & near unlimited expandable memory (currently 8Gb...), great connectivity, symbian S60 for new future software.
5.) I would strongly advise buying a screen cover and silicone cover to make sure the phone still looks good after many months (I had one for my n73 and it was very discreet, esp. Screen cover).
6.) Even if you just look at deals for new customers: for the exact same tariff as an 18m contract, you pay £5 less p/m on a 24m contract. The more expensive the tariff the greater the difference in the Overall Total Cost (OTC), e.g. the OTC of £20p/m:18m is the same as £15p/m:24m (i.e. even if you want new phone at 18m, it makes business sense to get the 24m anyway). For my deal at £20p/m:24m, the OTC difference would be only £30 compared to the £5p/m dearer equivalent 18m tariff (which I wasn’t offered – I was offered £10p/m dearer at 18m; OTC is greater than my 24m contract!). You could think of it this way in effect for my 24m contract; for the first 18m I would be paying the same as someone on an 18m contract (£25p/m) but for the last 6 months I would pay only £5p/m for in effect a sim only deal.
7.) o2 retention people might give you better deals overall on a 24m contract (as they did me), even if you got out a new contract at 18m and ditched the old contract.
8.) Phones are expensive and are built into the cost of a contract, if you can keep your current phone for as long as you want it – it is the best way of saving money. If you are a new phone ‘ho’ just for the sake of it – this is not for you. But the Nokia N82 has all that you will ever want and need – believe me!

    WHAT DO YOU THINK????

you got to bear in mind that if your priority is to get a new phone every 12 months then these 18 month and 24 month deals aren't very good as you're stuck with the same phone past it's product life cycle date which frankly these days is no more than 6-9months.

admittedly the deals are better on 18-24 month contracts tariff wise but that's only if you're focusing on getting a good deal and not fussed about the phone.

me personally i don't want to be tied down with a phone which is going to be obsolete compared to current models in 12 months time and what you'll notice from the o2 site is that ALL the phones depreciate from month to month.. admittedly the n95 retained its value until this new 8gb version came along but for all the sony phones they depreciate so quickly that they'd be free within 3 months of release.
