What a cracking deal I've just got!

My contract ended 3 weeks ago (£15pm) and I moved onto a Simplicity (£10pm) contract. I decided to call O2 to see what they could do.

I called on 3 occasions and got 3 different offers:

    1) £20pm for loads of minutes and texts (sorry the offer didn't interest me so I didn't note how many!) + £180 credited to the account. (18 month contract)

    2) 200mins + 400txts on N95 (free handset) for £20pm (18 month contract). NB - During this call I had decided on the LG Viewty and tried to get a deal for this - Got offered 200mins + 400texts for £25pm with free handset (18 month contract).

    3) 200mins + 400texts on Sony Ericsson W910i (free handset) for £15pm (18 month deal). NB - Tried to negotiate on LG Viewty and they wouldn't budge on original offer.

Therefore I called Vodaphone (didn't actually do the LG Viewty!), T-Mobile (couldn't get free handset below £30pm) and Orange (offered 350mins + 250texts for £25pm with phone costing (£29.99).

    I then called O2 for 4th time!

    4) I immediately asked the CS representative for my PAC code. I got put through to retentions (incidentally I spoke to retentions on each call). The lad asked why I wanted the PAC code. I said that I had only been offered the basic deal for new customers on the Viewty and told him what Orange had offered - and jazzed up Orange's offer ever so slightly ;). He came back and said " I'm reading the notes from the previous agents and I don't see any reason why I can't offer you the Simplicity 200mins + 400texts (18 month contract) for the Viewty with free handset for £15pm!!"

Absolute bargain on a cracking phone. I can now sell my Sony Ericsson K800i on ebay and make a few bob to put towards my 18 month deal.

I guess the lessons to get a deal that suits you arre:

    1) Know what you want - Sounds obvious but it's important.
    2) Know your stuff - i.e. source other deals and mention them to retentions. Also, be prepared to exaggerate them a little!
    3) Try a few phone calls as you may get Mr or Mrs non-personality on your original call!!
    4) Finally (and this part may be hard for some people) - Be prepared to move to a different provider. I didn't want to pay more than £15pm and wouldn't ask for my PAC code and then stay with O2! I was prepared to move to an Orange £15pm tariff but didn't really want to. I was told by a mate in a T-Mobile shop that I'd never get a free LG Viewty for under £25pm - So much for the experts!

I just rang retentons and have been offered:

    1) A free SE K850i 400txt 200mins for £20pm (12 month contract)

    or

    2) A N95 which would cost me £119.99 with 400 txt, 200 mins for £20pm (12month contract).

So basically I'd be staying on the same amount of txt/mins and length of contract as I'm on now but just getting an upgrade :(.

I personally think I should be offered more for my custom, what do you think?
    I'll get me coat!

I rang up yesterday just on the off chance as my contract finishes in a couple of weeks and I was wondering what they would offer me. I didn't want a new phone as I use an iPhone bought from the US, all they would give me was a Simplicity tariff.

Any others have experience of getting something good when not wanting a new phone?

That sounds like a humungously good deal. If it is possible to achieve that sort of deal, then I very tempted to try and get something similar. I have always got a new phone and contract each year on cashback deals, but with all the hassle and nause going on now with those deals it just doesn't seem worth it anymore. In fact, if you have got a deal costing £20 for the year, that works ont cheaper than all the special delivery costs of sending in cashback vouchers and bills.

Did you have to haggle much for that deal?
  • Just got the follwoing with no fuss and without demanding retentions and only mentioned my PAC code once:

    LG KF700 for free
    600 min
    1000 texts
    Unlimited O2 calls
    ITS
    Unlimited 3G internet

    £20/m for 18 months

    Dead friendly lady! Well pleased!

I'm currently on a tariff that doesn't exist anymore, Online Bonus 50. I get 50 anytime minutes and 500 texts for £19 a month.

My contract runs till the end of August but I keep going over my texts so I thought I'd give them a ring and see if I could move to a slightly higher tariff with more texts (I was prepared to pay extra)

What did they offer me? 250 texts and 75 minutes for £20 a month. The lady on the phone seemed surprised when I turned it down....
