The phone I want is the Samsung U600, does anyone know if 3 have this as one of their available handsets? It would also be great to hear of any line rental deals that have been made with this phone if possible!!

This isn't a 3g phone so Three won't offer it (although they offer relatively few 3g phones too!)

As for phoning 3 retentions - I've tried 4 times now (3 times whilst in possession of a PAC) and the offers are different each time. Sometimes they get better and sometimes they get worse. I think there is a big wheel at the back of the office that they spin to get your retention offer.......

(the sim only deals do seem to get getting lower as do the offers on the naff phones - pity I'm only interested in the 6120 which they only offer at last weeks web prices).

Does anyone know if it is too late for me to ring back and ask for the number to be changed to PAYG instead?

I first asked for my PAC. The following day rung up and cancelled then upon reading this thread on the 3rd day - called and changed it to PAYG.

No issues whatsoever apart from the usual 'this is what i can do for' but none of what they've offered was good enough.
  • Phoning retentions is like playing chicken - who will cave first!

I caved and accepted 300 mins/150txts/25mms etc for £5 a month with a £25 credit (12 month contract). Average of £2.91 a month for a year so pretty good.

    Hi Fiendishlyclever,

What did you say to get them to offer you more than the 300 mins and 150 txts? I dont suppose the ect includes the £5 of free downloads :D that would be nice!

If I ask for the phone to be changed to PAYG will I still have the use of the minutes ect in the 30 day notice period?

I'm not sure -I just kept turning down other offers (lots of them) until they offered me this one. I'm still convinced that it's the luck of the draw with who you get connected to at retentions (or it could just be that I got closer to having held my PAC for 30 days...)

And yes I did get the free £5 downloads included! I checked Three online and the £25 credit has already been applied to my account!

Sounds like what I was offered (minus the £25) when I gave my notice, so I think it does. Each to their own - the only thing I've ever used it for is a game of Tetris which I haven't even played!

I wonder if getting them to unlock your phone increases the level of panic and hence the quality of the offers? ;)
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.

grommit - every time I have requested 3 to give me the unlock code for my old phones, they want to charge me £15 each, even though the contracts finished 1 and 2 years ago respectively.!!!

A better way may be to seek out RoadHog on this forum - he did both my old 3 phones by post, and it only cost £12 to do both, including the post & packing. Unless, of course, you manage to squeeze 3 to do it for nowt, which in my experience is unlikely.....

  • I am on 3 as well, and this thread makes interesting reading! I have been with them since April 2004,and never really got the kind of deal out of them that is listed above. My current deal expires in Nov. 2007(it's a talk and text 600 18 month contract,£30 per month)and in the past because I couldn't be bothered with any hassle I have always accepted their first "we will keep you on your current deal and give you a new phone" offer! I now realise that I have made things far to easy for them! This time I will be giving 30 days written notice to quit and see how they handle the news! I am not to bothered if I do lose the 3 number because I also have a business rate phone on O2 through my work(which I never use!),but if they don't manage to keep me on board I can always use that while I shop around for another deal.

Just a point for anyone who gets a good deal out of three which doesn't include a replacement handset. If you really need a new handset try the Pay and go sets in the 3 stores in shopping centres. They usually have some new/refurbed pay and go phones at reasonable prices and all you need to do is put your current 3 sim into it and it will work. Or you could go to the online shop and buy one, such as Nokia 6288 for £110. This shows that when they let you think you are getting a new phone worth hundreds for renewing your contract in actual fact you are not. The actual phone can usually be bought quite reasonably if you really want it........buy it out of the savings you make on your line rental! At the minute I have a Sony ericsson k610i(good enough for my needs)it's reliable and still mechanically sound. I think I could get another year out of it. It has scratches and paint peeling off(well it is nearly 18 months old)but a phone cover would hide most of that and they are £5 from the local market!

Thanks so much for mentioning this :D I phoned up to ask them to swap my PAC and change to PAYG instead. They offered me the same 300 mins and 150 txts as the other day but with a bit of nudging and a bit of ' i will have to speak to my manager' they gave me the same deal so I am happy very happy with that! It was going to cost me £35 in an extra month of line rental anyway for my notice period and now I have a year of line rental, £60 of downloads plus mins/txt for £35.
