Well the Tesco S3 has arrived...i love it! I'm getting DL speeds of nearly 900 kb/s...faster than the MIL's TalkTalk connection! Do you think it's worth getting the 4g phone? I'm torn now!

That depends what speeds you're getting? Tesco (O2) have the worst 3G network in the UK and were even fined by ofcom for not having enough 3G coverage.

Three on the other hand have 98% 3G coverage and 80% coverage of their DC-HSPA+ network (Which the 4G S3 can use, the normal S3 can't) which supports speeds of up to 42mbps. In real life you should see speeds of around 15mbps+ and this will be even faster on 4G.
Here is a 3G speed test on Three- https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BAJ4gtKCUAA5L1o.jpg:large

I know this post sounds like a press release but Three really do have the best 3G network out there.

EDIT: Shazaaym. Go to the three website and look at the STANDARD S3 deal. It's the same as what you've just been offered. £29pm + £69 upfront. From this i can tell that the person you're talking to may be selling you the Normal S3. Get it in writing that it's the 4G LTE/DC-HSPA+ version. As i fear you may have been given misnformation.

Yeah, it's on 3, via Tesco. Even when i pointed this out to the retentions team, they still kept telling me that other networks would rip me off, but not them. Was quite amusing :D

My other phone on 3 wasn't getting speeds anywhere near this either. Very impressed.

Also, i'm thinking with the 4g, when loads of people switch over to it, there'll be more/faster 3g for everyone else...is that right?

I was getting 900+ kb\s...went up to 1+ mb\s for a few minutes (after updating software)...it's the mb\s i want then is it? I get confused between the 2! I was impressed tho because via the MIL's BB, my film had another 19 hours to go (at about 30% already downloaded). Via the S3, i got it in less than 1 1/2 hours.

Ah, sorry! forgot you got it on three haha. When you said tesco i thought it meant tesco mobile

Oh wow... you're getting less than 1mbps on Three. I would have thought you'd get more than that. Have you always lived in a bad/congested area.

Actually do me a favour, go to google play and download speed test app and tell me what you get.

And yes that does make sense. More people on 4G means less congestion on 3G. But the difference won't be that big unless you're in a 4G area using 3G...

Did you see my edit about the 4G model?

    Been a 3 customer for 13 years.
.......Called to see what deal I can get on iphone5 with one plan and got offered the same price as on their website.

I asked to speak to customer retention and was put on hold. The same person came back and offered £10 off the upfront cost of the phone.

It's rare to get get a deal on an iphone, unless it's an older model that they want to shift to make room for new stock.

The prices are set by Apple and network providers have little room to manouver.

Also the 13 years is irrelvant, how much they want to keep you as a customer, is based on how MUCH you have made them during your current contract, not how LONG you have been with them.

As someone has said, ask for your pac and hope the retentions team calls you back, but I wouldn't hold out much hope on getting a stonking deal on an iphone5.

Just seen your edit and next post...i did specifically ask for the ultrafast, she went away and checked and said it was. When she next rings, unless they waive the £69 i'm going to say no.

TBH, the only internet connection i have is through my phone, and it's been so slow for so long, these new speeds are good enough for me. I'm at the MIL's at the mo and it is quite built up, but i'm usually out in the sticks a bit so i don't think it will be as congested. I'll find out when i get home i suppose!

Just been on the phone with Crystal again...not budging on the £69. I told her i had the Tesco phone in my hand, and that i would send it back if they waived it, but she couldn't. Not sure if she actually did go away and try...she said she did but you just don't know do you!

Happy with this one anyway i think. How much more do you think the LTE version would cost to buy upfront? I suppose i could always sell this one at some point and put a bit extra to if i change my mind...

Tbh i'd stick with tesco if they can't sell you the ultrafast at a lower cost. And those speeds are impressive. Tbh 4G is not essential and so you're not losing out on anything much. Oh and those are good speeds, i totally mis read your original post haha. With the 4G version you'd probably see double the 7mbps in the area you're in at the moment on DC-HSPA+

And i'm still pretty sure that they're offering you the standard S3 and not the 4G one. Because when i tried having my conversation with them (read couple pages back) the guy told me he couldn't discount any high end phones unless they were already discounted for new customers. (Not saying thats true).

It'd probably be a ~£100 offset to sell the S3 and buy the LTE version (brand new). So it'd theoretically work out at around £29pm anyway.

To be honest the unlimited data is the reason i'd go for the 4G one. Especially if you're a heavy user. But if you're not then it's not essential.

where did my post go?! Strange.

    I think i'd qualify as a heavy user...i've used 3 gb already! :D Well, it was a 7gb film...oops!

I wasn't getting the above speeds on my torrents, but that's probably my settings. I'll have to see if i can speed it up.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was that deal TBH...it seems to be a recurring theme on this thread doesn't it? They don't seem to realise that they're losing a lot of respect by lying and not recognising customer loyalty...or maybe they do and just don't care.

bloody hell. Didn't you just get the phone today :D

I think Three limit torrents now (understandably) so that probably explains that.

And yeh, Three have been getting worse for customer retentions recently. It's because they now they have advantages over other networks so they don't have to try as hard. Plus they know the influx of people joining the network will offset any people leaving. And besides, you left three to rejoin them :P

Here's my viewpoint on the whole thing- http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=60061061&postcount=4183

    Hi,

Just thought i would let you know i contacted 3 to ask for my pack code. to my suprise they gave it to me quite easily without much struggle.

i asked for samsung galaxy 3 "ultra fast" on the 1 plan and was given the standard website costs £36pm plus £29 upfront fee!!!! and i am a 6 year customer!!!

im currently on sim only with 1 plan paying £18pm

QUESTION - What is the difference betwen the normal galaxy s3 and "ultrafast" phone wise?
Im thinking an alternative would be to buy the phone outright, but i need to understand what to look for with "ultrafast". this would also enable me to keep or negotiate a better sim deal

    cheers

    greg
