Hi guys, thought I would share my "success" story re retentions as it might be a little different.

My contract is talk and text 600 (500 any mins and 100 txt) which had been discounted to £5 about 2 years ago, I also use a lot of internet so had unlimited add on at £5 making total outlay £10 per month.

I really wanted to upgrade to an HTC desire but was told that to stay on my "wonderful, fantastic" (their words) discounted contract, I would have to pay a £240 lump sum for the handset. I didn't fancy that as over 18 months that basically works out as £23.33 per month.

I called back today determined to be a bit more hard ball (which is tough cos they know that if you are on a £5 + £5 contract already they've prob got you hooked)
Anyhoo, went for the "I want to leave 3" option and the chap initially told me the same thing (I'm on an amazing discount already and there is no way they can offer me the phone at less than £240 as they wouldn't even be paying off the cos of the desire considering my contract cost)
I stuck with it and said I wanted my PAC code, so he then said he had a new special offer just for me, which ended up being blah blah for £25 per month. I told him this worked out more expensive than what I'd already rejected- he reluctantly agreed.

I said again I wanted my PAC and this time he said because his manager fancied me or something he could give me unlimited internet on my current contract for free, instead of the £5 I currently pay. I half-heartedly pushed for a bit more discount on the phone but he wasn't having it so I went for it!

So basically I am paying £240 for the HTC desire in two instalment but my contract is from now £5 per month for all the mins texts and internet I need.
I possibly (probably?) could have held out for more but after years of my life in the past spent on the phone to 3 I just didn't have the heart and anyway,I felt pretty pleased.

So over 18 months that works out at £18.33 per month
Over 24 months its £15 per month, and the longer time goes on, essentially the cheaper the overall monthly pay has been, if that makes any sense.

Anyway, sorry for rambling. Am v happy, and just really hoping the desire arrives as said on Monday and all goes ok. Thanks for help guys!

Wow, you have all the luck! :D

My details now show the Internet Talker plan. If it was me I'd play ignorant for a month and watch what was on my bill. Many moons ago when I called CS I got a text shortly after regarding internet access, after checking my account I found that the Internet Max addon had been added. My next bill didn't show any change to my plan, so I've had free internet ever since. Morally wrong? but it was their mistake.

I'm still wating for my Desire, they won't budge on the delivery date of next Monday :(

    Perhaps this is Karma?
I hope you'll get it soon enough. I read on the web that 3 will be selling a branded version of this phone from June so hopefully you'll get one from the last batch of unbranded handset.
It's a really good phone and the only annoying parts I've found so far are the poor battery (which can be replaced with an extended one) and the fact that Skype doesn't work on this handset yet (but there's an apps on the market which acts as Skype, using your Skype log in details) so nothing to moan about, really...
    Good luck!

i'm with 3 and they've offered a Nokia X6 for free with 900 mins, unltd texts and internet for £25 pm (same as i'm on now) but a new contract for 24 months.

i've asked for the HTC desire for free and they want £28 pm instead (same mins etc). Doesn't sound a bad deal?

i'm sticking and asking them i want to pay £25 pm (its only £3 pm difference) considering i've been with them for over 5 years and am signing to a new 2 year contract.

    Hope so :)

As for the battery, I've read on another forum that it's normal the life is pretty short for the first week or so. It should improve over time, deep discharging then full overnight charging mine seems to help.

Well, I got a call at the weekend from 3 with a terrible offer that was so bad I can't remember it as it wasn't worth remembering. I phoned them today and was on the phone for about an hour. Best deal I was offered was a free Desire, 300 mix and match, unlimited 3 calls, unlimited internet for £22 for 24 months. Wasn't it available for £20 for new customers on their website a few days ago?

I asked what my loyalty discount was and they told me they don't do that anymore. They wouldn't budge at all on an 18 month contract. Best they could do was offer me a 24 month warranty, free travel charger and a free 4gb memory card (don't you get that for free anyway?) I asked for my PAC.

Then I spoke to a 'supervisor' who could not say anything the first guy hadn't told me. Then I got passed back and I got my PAC sent through. Its so infuriating

I was told if I was asking for my PAC, hoping to get a call back from someone with a good deal that I shouldn't bother as they don't do that anymore.

This is the same deal that my wife was offered - but we pushed and pushed and managed to get 500 mix and match for that price - that was a real push and was the best we were going to get.

So we agreed on Free HTC desire - 500 mix and match - unlimited internet - unlimited 3to3 on 24 month contract for £22 per month.

Although we were bargaining on 2 contracts because mine is out of contract too - I got iphone 3gs 900 mix and match - unlimited internet - 300 3to3 for £28 per month 18 month contract.

    Although

Hi, I've upgraded to an HTC desire last week, which was delivered promptly (lucky me!) with the internet 100 + 500mb data + 100 picture emails for £17 a month. I was also told that my new tariff was going to start on the day I upgraded, so I check the "my 3" page on my old phone and surely enough, it showed my new tariff.
Since getting my new phone however, I checked again and it now shows 300mns voice + 3000 texts + unlimited data, which was my old tariff at £15 a month.
All in all it is a better deal than what I agreed on and I will very unlikely use more than the internet talker 100 mns and texts I originally thought I signed up to, but I wonder how much my bill will come to (£15 or £17 or more?). I'm reluctant to call 3 cs because if it is a mistake on their part then I'd rather play ignorant.
I'm just going to wait for my bill and either have a pleasant surprise (and buy myself a lottery ticket ) or get very angry with someone over in India.
I was wondering if the same had happened to anyone else.

This is because your old monthly plan cycle has not finish, your new plan will kick in once the new monthly cycle starts, although your contract date starts the date you upgraded if you know what I mean.

I've just agreed to stay with 3 for another two years.

I've got the HTC Desire for £24pm with 100mins, unlimited texts and internet. Don't feel that it's a bad deal.

    There's always someone.

You could have posted that a little earlier as I was reading this thread whilst talking to him! Not going to lose sleep over it.
