Is it better to phone and cancel or write to them?
Or both?
I doubt I want a new contract, mine actually ended last august and I just let it carry on, didn't upgrade or anything cos I had a lot on my mind at the moment.
I just want to cancel and go onto PAYG on either O2 or Orange and don't need a new phone. I never get my moneys worth with a contract.
Just tell them you want to give your notice AND convert the number to PAYG when your notice is up. They count as two separate instructions and both have 30 days notice required so make sure you do both at the same time.
Politely refuse the offers they make you stating you want to look at other networks.
I'd keep refusing till the last few days and see what offer they come up with. You may get a £5 a month deal with a phone that will beat any PAYG costs.
Good Luck.
Edit: Make sure your last day of notice will be a weekday as the retentions dept that give the best deals only work weekdays.0 -

I need to give my 30 days notice on Friday 29th August so my 30 days runs out over the weekend, but I don't see any way to avoid that.
If you haven't been called by midday Friday you could phone and ask for retentions to call you back asap. Don't do deal with the person that answers the call wait for the calback.0 -
Has anyone who sighed a new contract and took an upgrade managed to get their old phone unlocked for free?
I want my old phone unlocked but don't want to pay £15 for the privillage I should have made it a condition of my staying.0 -
'3' don't unlock without payment.0

You can cancel over the phone.

The man is telling me I have three choices
Either CANCEL
or
go to PAYG
or
take a PAC
I really dont understand, i told him verbatim what you wrote above, give notice AND convert to PAYG when notice is up, but he said I cant do that.
He says if I cancel I cannot take the number to PAYG and when it becomes PAYG I cant take my number to another network
If I take a PAC from him I can set up a new contract with another network tomorrow, and it will take a few days for the number to port, but after that my three contract is cancelled, although I'll still have to pay them for the month to Sept 22.
Put more simply, how do I give notice, so that they call me in 28 days and offer me a deal? I must not lose my number
Cheers

That is a blatant lie! You can request your PAC code once your on payg and use it to go to another network if wish toPut more simply, how do I give notice, so that they call me in 28 days and offer me a deal? I must not lose my number
Just tell them to convert you to payg once your contract ends... not "cancel and convert to payg". The same post confused me too, no doubt you too and the three employee!
Your intention to convert to payg includes that you no longer wish to continue with your contract!SLC: £13000+
