I agree that getting your own domain with emai included is the way to go. (You don't need to put a website up, just use the email).

I was also an Orange customer and when they closed their email I thought 'Never want that to happen again' so got a domain with 1&1, now IONOS. It currently costs me £12 a year.

I do also have a gmail for shopping etc. which is set to automatically forward to my domain email. (So I can simply abandon the gmail and start another with a different name if ever needed).

Has anyone heard about this directly from VM? All I have seen is the Register article (which I don't doubt). I won't be too sorry to see its demise - I use their SMTP server for some sundry tasks but can easily move.

What's ironic about all this is that Virgin email was previously a thin veneer on top of the Gmail platform.

But most ISP email has been repackaged something else for a while (or have since farmed it off). Sky uses Yahoo, BT used to be BT Yahoo and TalkTalk recently shovelled their email offerings off to Everymail, though I'm sure it had a few providers. Plusnet shifted their offerings to Greenby.

I have not heard anything at all yet but there are a couple of facebook groups that I've joined that are helpful in understanding the changes. However without seeing this initial mention on here of Virgin email systems being removed I would know nothing about it.

I have started making the change to swap everything over the gmail- I've hundreds , maybe even thousands to do though (like many others) , I keep remembering something else that's connected to Virgin emails - and some places won't even accept a change of email details. I'm changing the important stuff first, but even that failed as I had a message by SMS this morning from my bank saying that they can't get my usual weekly roundup through on my email - even though I changed the email some days ago.

My other concern is that having read through some of the facebook forums people have reported not being warned about the closure- and just having no access one day. This means that anyone taking advantage of the Junara 1 year 'free' use can't go ahead as it needs confirmation pinged from the existing Virgin address.

As I feared my work will not enter into any correspondence about changing my address - so this is something I am having to spend hours on trying to sort out. As above I have not yet been formally told by Virgin that my email account is going, but my emails are now not all getting through- or are taking a considerable time. Some of the things I've changed require a code pinged to my Virgin email- but have taken 2 hours to arrive when it says the code is only valid for 10 minutes!

Just a note that email is not regarded as a secure communication method, it should never be used for highly confidential documents which are also not encrypted, it should never be used for sending passwords.

As it is for work purposes I would just be getting a Office 365 business email, a Gmail account purely for work etc and telling your work you no longer have access to your VM email.

There's no point in going over this again as I do not wish to state who I work for or why this is difficult - if it was a simple as 'talking to someone' I would have done that, but for reasons, that is not possible.

I'm sure that once they find you aren't doing your work, they will somehow manage to resolve the situation. I remember when trying to learn to ride a horse over 50 years ago being told there was no such word as 'can't' only 'I find it difficult'.

what’s the best one to switch to? No idea how I download all old emails, and transfer them somewhere else, and continue to be able to read back. This will be fun
