This is the one thing I dreaded, I have used the same email address for decades and work will not allow me to change it - I'm going to be really stuck going forward unless pointing out that I physically can't use the address means they will relent.

I have already started switching things across to a Gmail account but may have to find a provider that work will accept.

The work email address will have to change as at some point all the above will no longer function.

Always safer to have a non-ISP email although many people used their ISP when they first got access and kept it, like yourself, for many years.

Does say in the linked report that users can transfer their email accounts to another email operator, who will allow it to continue for another year for free.

After that there will be a (unspecified) charge. If @soolin 's employer wants them to keep the same address then they can pick up the cost.

Why are work allowing you to use a third party email provider? Seems an odd arrangement. My work one has the name of my employer in the domain bit at the end!

I work remotely, they will only use the email they verified and security cleared 20+ years ago. I have in the past got them to send a reminder to another address , but they have so far resisted sending ‘confidential’ paperwork passwords etc to anything other than my Virgin email.

Well they must have employed people more recently WITHOUT Virgin Media email addresses, what do they use? Have you asked?

They arent going to keep whole domains going for your, no offense, rather unique circumstances that could easily be resolved by a) asking HR what email providers they will allow, or b) asking your colleagues what they use.

@soolin's email account and their employer's inability / refusal to countenance change has been the subject of discussion on this board before.

No matter what member's opinions might be of such an employer and/or their policies, there is no point in repeating that discussion again.

Fair enough but I dont believe for a minute there isnt other employees with other email providers, but if its like talking to a brick wall I wont bother bringing it up again! Point remains they arent going to keep domains running so they will have to change the email address they have for him/her.

Plusnet are finishing doing the same thing transfering to a company called Greenby. (£12.50 corrected as per post below,) pa after the free year, or maybe it was two)

Hopefully the VM to Junara/atmail transfer for their customers goes more smoothly.

Decoupling email from internet provision could make it easier to switch ISPs - a potential MSE upside.

For Plusnet it's two years for free and then (currently) £12.50 p/a after that.

I first came across this problem when my Orange closed down all their email servers including my longstanding Freeserve email address. With the plethora of free providers such as Google, Yahoo, Microsoft etc. plus the fact some ISP's made it difficult or impossible to keep your email address if you changed ISP, it was clear that ISP email servers were on the way out.

I decided then to be free of ISP email and their flaky servers, bought a domain and host in on mythic-beasts, unlimited email addresses to keep the spammy companies away from my main address. No it's not free but i'm not sharing my information with Google et al either.
