The first thing I'd do is bung a complaint in, technical issues have been quite profitable when it comes to compensation in my experience. You can contact them for free using the contact form on their website, I also note their lost passbooks phone number is a freephone number, so if need be you could try ringing that and they might pass you through to the correct team for free, though I've never tried this so it might not work but it does with others.

Thank you for sharing your experience, I will email them and see if that resolves things.

Thank you for your advice, I did wonder about using the lost passbooks freephone number, I will give it a go if other options don't work.

Mine - my first FD RS - matured on April 25th, a Saturday, and it sat there, with the interest added but the funds not accessible, until Friday 1st May, when it turned into the ordinary savings account and I could transfer money out. I’ve left £1 in it which I hope will make it quicker next time. I didn’t know I could message them.
Fortunately I didn’t want to open a new RS immediately because of a temporary cash flow issue.

FD
Last year I managed to renew it on maturity day (without phone calls, done it all in app day before maturity), this time round I used the same method and it took 3 days. I guess it would've been 1 day if the weekend wasn't on the way.

I fell at the first hurdle as I don't have a cheque book so it does seem that I can't open the account by post

Mansfield.
I always sent cheques with my application forms for passbook accounts, so don't know for sure, but many building societies allow to open regular savers without initial cheque deposit. I'd give them a call and ask. In my personal experience it is quick to get through and staff is very friendly, helpful and competent.

@ MallyGirl - You can still apply and write a clear note on the application form that you intend to fund the account electronically from your nominated bank account once you know your Mansfield Milestone RS account number. A few have used this method in the past with other BS's and applications have been accepted, so it's worth a go 😉.
If your bank account permits, I'd be requesting a cheque book and keep requesting one, until you get one. This year in particular, I've found having a cheque book is invaluable - I've written 3 cheques to open RS already this year, which has saved me a lot of faffing around 😉.

And if ordering a cheque book, ensure you have an overdraft facility on the account you're using, this way you don't need to keep any money in a current account earning no interest whilst waiting for the cheque to clear and can instead just wait for the cheque to be taken and then top the current account back up to nil when this happens.
