Tomato Energy (Electric Only Supplier) - Too Good To Be True ?

solarite said:Yep, same here. Gone with E.ON as their standing charge is only 60p compared to 69p for my region and night rate 7.5p for 6 hours. Not as good as Tomato, but close. Switch will take place on Thursday and had the 'Are you sure we can't convince you to stay' email from BG. I was very nearly going with their EV tariff at 9p/ SC 68p.I don't have an EV and EOn didn't require any EV details.
Just out of interest, are you both able to read your meter reading and/or view any credit left with Tomato on BG? I can login BG but don't have any open reading / smarter meter reading etc. I also joined the Peak Save on Sunday but no result is shown. Am I safe to switch? I tried to put my address on Octopus web, and there was a message saying my addresss is a business one (of course it isn't). Any idea if that was caused by Tomato and that would stop me switching?JohnPo said:Bit of an update - looks like my switch away from BG is going through, it was blocked last Wednesday because 'The industry body that oversees switching has temporarily stopped the move' according to Octopus. Started a switch again today and this time I got the email & text from BG begging me to stay and a follow phone call from someone UK based in their retentions team at the Octopus side everything looks good - I go back on supply with them this Wednesday.0 -
If that's confirmed it's another change of heart on Eon's part, we had a thread just over a month ago saying they no longer offer their EV tariff unless you have an EV.solarite said:Yep, same here. Assuming we are looking at Next Drive V11, the T&C's indicate that having an EV is a requirement :Qyburn said:

3.1 To be eligible for this tariff the customer must:
3.1.1 Own or lease an electric or hybrid vehicle and charge it at their home. If the Customer does not meet this eligibility criteria, we reserve the right to remove them from this tariff.
And the online sign up process Eligibility page requires you to tick a box saying "I have read and understood this". One of the Eligibility statements shown is that "You have an electric car".
Whether EON would ever check or ask for proof is another matter.0 -

As regards to Tomato - they never showed account balances as you paid by DD or bank transfer on receipt of bill, so no balances to transfer or more accurately be credited by the SOLR. As regards switching, if Tomato had you incorrectly classed as a business customer then this might be reflected in how you are classed by BG - you need to sort that with them. Worth putting your details into a switching site to see if they also have you classed as a business customer as they check the industry database.0 -
Id argue that's not a requirement, there is no definition of electric vehicle so a remote car would do.. I've seen with other providers clarifying that it needs to be registered with DVLA etc. not with EON.lohr500 said:

Anyway, the only penalty is the possibility of being removed.. which they may, they may not do.2 -
Thanks for the reply. I just checked it again, I think the business address issue has been fixed without me notifying them. I also started seeing one day of usage on BG after they were appointed as the SOLR. If I may ask, if you were with Octopus before switching to Tomato, are you switching back to Octopus using the same account holder? Or have you attempted to sign up using your wife's/husband's/housemate's name to get a new sign-up bonus?JohnPo said:randomBean said:solarite said:Yep, same here. My gas was already with them so used the same account. I'm sure using a different email address is all you need to create a new account.1 -
I've just started my Switch to Eon as well.
I went with the Smart Tariff even though the description of it makes little sense! If I get the 6.5p of off peak thats fine. I do have an EV, but really want that off peak rate for battery storage. Will see how we get on.

If they DO ask for proof and you don't have any, what are they going to do? Sue you for buying electricity from them? The whole idea of only allowing overnight cheap electricity to EV owners nowadays is ridiculous. (I do realise that there are some tariffs where apparently they control when your EV charger actually takes electricity, so they do need you to actually have an EV so they can control how much electricity is taken and at what time of the night.) There can only be a tiny number of people who have solar batteries, and what difference does it make if you use solar batteries or a storage heater to use large amounts of electricity overnight? I think I may go with E-on then.0
