Tomato Energy (Electric Only Supplier) - Too Good To Be True ?

I doubt you'll be able to join 'Peak Save' that quickly - they need to check that they are connected to your smart meters and are getting a regular feed of half hourly readings, then they'll send you confirmation that you've joined the scheme.solarite said:
I rang Octopus asking if it was possible to switch. Their staff have been told we will have to wait 30 days before we can switch as BG staff have to work through the backlog, so to try again around 18th December! We were informed that we could switch once our account has been set up which has happened. My in home meter now reports that BG is the electricity provider (from today). Mywatts no longer giving results as from 8pm 17th Nov. I've signed up for the Weekend Sunday half price so will charge the batteries, which will be a small consolation. I'm going to keep trying to switch before the 30 days are up!Earthlike2141 said:Does anyone know when we can start the switch process from BG?
I did a password reset on my Tomato Energy email address at BG and logged into a BG account tat was there. It says it can't show me an account balance yet, but I do have an account number.
No way I'm staying on their tariffs so waiting to pull the switch trigger.

It’s now very apparent that not being able to read smart meters was part of the business plan.Newbie_John said:Well, I do feel like Tomato was destined to fail, it was just a life support for Senapt.
And what has actually Tomato done that is new, better? Every company has a similar EV/Heat Pump tarrif similar to Lifestyle, their Smile was a "bad" copy of Agile. Tomato just had everything much much cheaper.
I'm not sure what would happen if they haven't onboarded smart meters they couldn't read? Increase prices to cover loses? Sell to a rich investor? Was it a pyramid scheme? Or they had no idea - just wanted keep it going for as long as possible knowing Senapt gets paid more and more?
They knew from September 2024 they can't read all meters but still carried on taking all customers.. until OFGEM banned them in April 2025. Every other company has a policy that you Frist move to standard rate and if reads are OK you're free to move to smart tarriffs.“Unfortunately, I was correct to be suspicious of this “failure”. Tomato fabricated HH data within their system for the missing period (most of Sept, October). They reversed my pattern of consumption from mostly off-peak to mostly peak which meant their calculated bills are massively artificially inflated. I obviously lodged a complaint but they denied everything. They also blocked access to the company who own the Bright app to try to prevent the discrepancy being detected. “0 -
I thought I would give it a go and was surprised to get the confirmation email within a few minutes.spot1034 said:

Wouldn't it need to be separately authorised, and connect as an "other user"? It would be a bit disappointing if an ex-supplied could still access your meter without being given new permissions.Chrysalis said:
Could serve as an alternate data source in case something happens to bright.Bendo said:Posted yesterday...

Guess thats why they have that form for it. I think this is to keep the platform going, which I think has always been their main reason for being in the energy market.0 -
It took me weeks, and I don't remember rushing to join after becoming a customer so they must have changed it since then. No problems since though, and their systems seem to work well.solarite said:

The problem with that business plan is there are plenty of other user providers out there and the market for end users isn't great.. People aren't going to pay more than a couple of quid a year to access their data as the likes of Hugo have probably discovered since they went paid.1 -
Bit of an update - looks like my switch away from BG is going through, it was blocked last Wednesday because 'The industry body that oversees switching has temporarily stopped the move' according to Octopus. Started a switch again today and this time I got the email & text from BG begging me to stay and a follow phone call from someone UK based in their retentions team at the Octopus side everything looks good - I go back on supply with them this Wednesday.3

Yep, same here. Gone with E.ON as their standing charge is only 60p compared to 69p for my region and night rate 7.5p for 6 hours. Not as good as Tomato, but close. Switch will take place on Thursday and had the 'Are you sure we can't convince you to stay' email from BG. I was very nearly going with their EV tariff at 9p/ SC 68p.I don't have an EV and EOn didn't require any EV details.1
