Well done to DS1. Lovely news.5

Thank you all - it has been a thorn in everyone's side for several years as they both hate driving but need to be able to. The insurance wasn't as bad as I expected so I will get that sorted shortly.
Nice bright skies here so I will mostly be happily pottering in the garden. I can see little PP dashing round chasing bees in the sunshine, and TT up on the wall supervising her stupidity. My mortgage free diary: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6498069/whoops-here-comes-the-cheese

Well done DS1 and you getting that money back into your budget.. lovely day to gardenDON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

My DS hates driving too & deliberately failed his theory the first time, but I knew he shouldn't have & as grandad was paying told him he wasn't being fair. He passed his test first time then. But you could count on your fingers the number of times he has driven since & he is in his 40s now. I have to confess I find it really difficult to understand as I have really loved driving & one of my biggest dreads on getting older is needing to stop. I seem to have my eyesight & brain perminently on a watch list.6

Do try to push your DS’s to drive because it is all too easy to avoid as I’m sure you’re aware. I was taught to drive by a friend of the family who was what was called “a travelling salesman” in 1981 simply because he enjoyed teaching it. He’d got his wife and two kids through their tests and asked me if I wanted to learn for free using my parents Datsun. At 20 I shrugged and agreed. Passed first time within 4 months and have never driven since!
I do, 43 years later still have bragging rights I passed first time but the thought of driving now absolutely petrifys me despite still having a full, clean (paper!) driving license!

It has been lovely Cherryfudge and Ladywithaplan, lots of work done that will make things easier when true gardening spring arrives.
BadMemory I hate driving but accept it as a necessity, Mr Redo loved it like you and couldn't understand why they didn't jump at the chance for freedom.Sallyforth, I know, I am going to make them. It is about £70 a month for the insurance for all three of us to be able to drive their little car which is worth it if they use it.Yesterday, for quite possibly the first time ever, I worked out how to add window wash to my car so that we are not heading north today without any. Small steps.Today DS1 and I (plus Doglet) are heading away for a weekend of walking, meeting family and Mr Redos best friend to go on his favourite hill walk. I live in a mostly flat county so this will be both enjoyable and hard work on my bad ankle. Must chuck my ugly Scarpa boots in the car as they have much better ankle support than the boots I have packed. I've got ibuprofen gel, elastic bandage and strapping just in case. Vague plan to either go to the seaside or a waterfall on Sunday, and then home via Haworth on Monday for a spot of Brontë atmosphere.DS1 was most pleased that we will be ten minutes away from a B00ths so he can visit the famous cheese counter! My mortgage free diary: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6498069/whoops-here-comes-the-cheese
