Ah well, I've now got two free hours to use. Will use them up together one Sunday and call it a day I think. I can barely save anything and it's become more trouble than it's worth.

I only saw the latest session after it had started, so I missed out.

But a few pennies worth of points towards a cuddly toy hardly seems worth the effort unless you're just in it for the gaming.

I think the main value, aside from 'doing one's bit' to help relieve some pressure on the grid, is in earning free weekend electricity hours.

Yes, I think there is indeed an element of demonstrating the concept that people can be incentivised to change their habits and move some of their usage to less demanding periods. Clearly some can be incentivised more than others, for whatever reason(s). I still remember the rolling power cuts of the 1970s so wouldn't want to return to that.

Apologies if this has already been discussed -

if we use some happy hours this Sunday we want to charge the EV - which is fine as the EV charging is ‘blind’ to our solar battery.

But we also want to charge the solar battery as much as poss during the happy hours.

If the sun is shining during the happy hours (the last lot were pretty early so this is very possible) we want to be charging the battery from the grid instead of our solar panels.

Maybe we could charge solar battery as normal in the night then force discharge of the battery just before the happy hours. But that still wouldn’t help if the sun was shining during the happy hours.

Any solar you happen to generate during the happy hour will just reduce what you are pulling from the grid at the time.

If you absolutely want to pull from the grid rather than use any solar you may be generating, then you can always turn off your solar panels (maybe turn off the black DC isolator switches) so there is no DC voltage going into your inverter, but I'm not sure why you would do that. Personally I wouldn't overthink the solar aspect, if the sun shines, it shines. It's all free during that hour regardless of where it comes from.

Yes, you could export your battery to the grid before the happy hour and refill it during that time. Please keep in mind the 16kWh free limit set by Octopus, and the safe limits of your incoming supply when calculating what may work best for you.
