Unless you have very ancient gear, nothing uses more than 1W on standby.

I often think i should do something with my (now ancient)  HP Microserver that runs ansible nas and powers my Home Assistant and media serving / downloads. With 2 spinning disks it's a pretty much constant 36 W draw.

Ironically I've got smart plugs on the TV and my wfh desk to save a few Watts here and there.

We joined Agile on the 7th December last year, prior to that we were on Flux when it was introduced and Go. To date including charging up our PHEV car over the last 12 months 1833 kWh according to our Octopus Watch APP.

    You: £553.08
    Agile: £558.50
    Go: £740.00
    Tracker: £769.72
    Flux: £860.25
    Standard: £1023.45

    Including standing charge.

This does not count for our export @ 15 pence kWh 3015 £452.25

    12 months total including dreaded standing charge £553.08 - £452.25 =£100.83

Yes, that's where SSDs benefit over spinning metal, the power draw is much lower.

Unfortunately though a pair of 4TB ssds don't come cheap. Although they are a lot cheaper now than last time I looked. Still be quite a long payback though.

Indeed, not cheap if you need that volume of storage. I have a pair of 1GB NVMe's running in RAID1 on my system and the speed benefits, combined with lower noise and power usage are a delight.

The Octopus app tells me we used 3.5kWh overnight/first thing this morning, at a grand cost of 8p. That's a load of towels washed and mostly dried, and the dishwasher run through - so all stuff that would have cost us far more prior to moving across to Agile, so all in all I'm pretty delighted with that.

Yeah I probably need to have a look and see what I actually need with a view to replacing it. One thing I do need is to ensure it's reliable as it going down after turrning on my heating and immersions wouldn't be fun potentially.

The noise I don't really notice anymore and the power it does use probably warms my office a touch.

So far. I'm at 14 kWh for about 18p. No gas burned so far as the heating on overnight means no need. Yesterday at this point the missus had the heating going pretty much all morning.
  • That's very decent Bendo. There's a limited amount we can do on the heating side of things, although we will probably take the chance to run the dehumidifier upstairs at times, and that in itself creates a bit of additional warmth of course. Might have a think about what we can do using the oil filled rad, mind you. If the kitchen UFH was programmable on a timer then I'd certainly be looking to switch that on on very low cost nights, but as it is it would have to run right through from when we go to bed until we got up. Might be practical sometimes, but probably not always.

About a year ago my old boilermate thermal store started leaking. I'd not long moved to Agile and had been planning to rewire it as it had 2 3 kW immersions that could run the hot water and heating.

Given it was late October and no chance of getting a heat pump quickly, my local gas guy recommend riping it out and fitting an unvented cylinder,  although seeing the potential to run a thermal store on electric at the right times, I opted to get him to fit a 250 litre gledhill torrent store.

Whether it will prove a wise choice or not is another matter but so far it's working well with Home Assistant turning on all the rads and the immersions when the price is below 1.5p kWh.
