Heavy prices today, even outside the normal peak rates, switched off at 8.00am to 1.00pm and went on a shopping trip, planning to use the computer on battery running a 32 inch monitor (25W) post 7pm rather than my 40 inch TV plus HiFi (75W), no cooking other than nuking four cups of coffee in the microwave in the cheaper morning and pm slots. All good fun, willing to do it for a few days but not forever.

Sad thing is that it does affect the general economy as well, can't be bothered upgrading the TV to 55-65 inch as it will consume more power, same for electric oven - cheaper to use my excellent Sharp microwave. There has been some sun so if I had solar/battery it would have been fine but I now use so little electric it is impossible to get a payback out of it, though I suppose exporting most if it would give a minor income.
Not wanting to offend but you're in the later stages of life and you're happy to deny yourself the pleasures of a bigger telly because it uses more electricity? It's not an income issue as far as I can remember

I'm not sure I'd even want an oven that large.

None of the apps I have tried seem to be able to compare the cost of usage with Agile vs an E7 tariff. When you compare to a fixed (or flexible) it doesn't factor in the different day/night rates - so the savings aren't accurate.

I've made my own spreadsheet based on the agile pricing and my usage data exported, but it's a bit of a faff.

Anyone know of anything that works for that?

Even if the Octopus compare app doesn't support E7 nativity (I've not checked) , you can enter a custom tariff so you can just enter the relevant rates for the various time periods and do it the way.

I's it just the fact the SC is more on the October agile?
Yes, I think so. I signed up to Agile back in March, and was given a 12 month fix of the then current Standing Charge, so am still paying ~52p instead of the current 62p, until March next year. We all pay the same half hourly rates, so the SC is the only thing that can change (besides technical things like the £1 peak rate cap or the formulas used)

Simply not interested in handing over crazy money to an energy cartel, all these trivial things add up to real savings over a twelve month period. I do sell stuff and upgrade after a reasonable amount of use (ten years on a 40 inch LED TV, for instance) and I am not worried about money as such but not inclined to throw it away. Just bought a Canon R100 camera for £400, but it only cost me £20 as I sold a couple of aging Nikons to cover most of the cost (one large and one compact, the R blending the two into one, so to speak). I am amazed at the younger generation, they never try to hustle on price and seem to get a slight buzz out of handling actual cash.

Good to see Agile prices back down, apparently yesterday the electric generation was close to not covering demand, hence high prices, so I did my tiny bit in lowering useage - if everyone was on Agile it would save the Grid a fortune.

My old Panasonic plasma 40 inch plasma TV uses a lot more power than my 5 year old OLED LG TV . On standby alone the plasma burns away 15 watts while the OLED is only 1 watt . Depends which TV mode you select as to power used while viewing as they all differ , eg dynamic is around 250 watts , while eco is only 150 watts and a better picture .Get an OLED TV bought as they have the best screens by a country mile than any other s.
Yesterday the kwh rate was bonkers high at over 66 p a kwh for several segments  I reverted back to my old  energy crisis times and just switched the lot off at the consumer unit ( fridge freeezer as well ) and went out for a walk for 2.5 hrs , and thats what I will do when the rates get too high .

I went out for the day, switched off at the mains at 6am and powered back up at 10pm - used a total of 10p worth of electricity over the 24 hours. It did seem to upset my octopus mini and the app though - took until 9am this morning to get them to reconnect to the smart meters. Interestlingly my gas meter which has been refusing to update my prepayment balance on the app for a month has now started to communicate pdoperly again.  All round a successful day!

  • Fridge/freezer? We're out at work and checking Octopus app, we used 1p an hour during that time

Turning off at the wall is something my in laws do with telly / router etc.
