  • Just discovered Mr S is doing veg at 19p, so will add some to tomorrows delivery I think. I normally only buy veg with no plastic, but at that price I think I might get some. I'll make sure to re-use the plastic bags as much as I can.

  • I always take carrots out of bag (so they don't sweat) and store them loose in the bottom fridge drawer. They last a t least a week that way.  Same for parsnips, but I tend to par boil and freeze those anyway as there is only me who likes them.

Thanks for the carrot tip @weenancyinAmerica, I will try that. New it worked for celery, but didn't know about carrots
It works for parsnips, lettuce, rhubarb... anything with an end that's been attached to a root, basically, though I'm not sure about potatoes or sweet potatoes. For things like lettuce, shave a sliver off the bottom so you aren't making dried up ends try to regenerate. If you buy pre-cut herbs, you can do similar, though lining up the ends to trim them is a bit of a faff.

Do change the water, preferably daily, as it gets manky.

They ought to make fridges with an openable gap above the salad drawer in the interests of not wasting food! :)

SA, well done on the DIY! That must be a good feeling!

I found it interesting yesterday that Aldi's shelf price for cabbage was 19p, but it went through the till at 15p, which I think is Tesco's price.  I'm sure that happened last Christmas too.

You're stuck between a rock and a hard place if you want to buy the cheap veg - the swede isn't packaged though. You can recycle soft plastic in quite a few places to try and mitigate it. I take mine to Mr T once a week and it's shocking just how much builds up in the course of just a week, although a good portion of it is pet food pouches.
