I managed to ring to get the broadband upgraded to 4mg for an extra 2.50 per month. So now paying 33.25 for 4 meg, all channels and phone...

Also, whilst speaking to him he said it doesnt matter if you are in contract or not - can ring during your 12 months and still get these deals! Said that the prices are going down in January and that through the 0800 number you will get ANY offer available to new customers and in fact better :)

    HTH someome...

I also asked about a wireless router and she said no problem go out and by one and they will credit my account.

Has anyone else managed to get a free wireless router out of NTL as well? I ask as I currently have 10MB BB, but only a 802.11b router (bought myself last year when I had gone up from dial-up to 512KB!). Apparently from other boards the 11b router can only really go up to 4/5MB (?) therefore I do not get the benefit of the speed upgrade (it is not noticeably faster than 1MB and the speedtests get to around 4 MB max!).

    Many thanks

  • I need some help!! Just called retentions and didn't really get anywhere really, I think I dithered too much

    At the moment we've got:
    TV analogue at £5.50
    Telephone £11.00
    1mb internet £17.99

What should I ask for, so dissapointed, may be they don't want to keep us?
  • Wow - hadn't really realised how easy NTL are! I phoned them yesterday and simply asked was i still in contract for my Broadband - the answer was no and then at the mention of BT's £9.99 per month offer for 6 months i got the same with NTL!! Think I'll even come back for phone and free TV now that my freeviw is playing up - i also received a flyer through the post saying if i phon eup within 30 days of phone/tv istallation they'll refund the installation charge and first months line rental!

    Has anyone else tried this?

But NTL phone is a rip off, if you plan not making any calls, but need people to ring you then maybe it's OK, but if you plan to use the phone to make outgoing calls, you'd be crazy to go to NTL for the phone.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

  • Hi, longtime lurker, new poster here!

I was hoping for some advice with dealing with NTHell. We've been with them foe 6 and a half years and I have had enough of the terrible service, rude call cnetre staff, and the fact that my monthly bill is going through the roof. We had to go with NTL (or Cable & Wireless as it was then) when we moved in to this house, as we had no BT line and no outdoor aerial. My problem is, they know that we have no BT line, so what can I threaten them with to get them to lower my bills? I am actually very tempted to bite the bullet and pay the £120 to get a BT line installed, but would rather try to get a better NTL deal first.

My last bill is as follows:

Family TV and Line Rental: £30.50
    1Mg BB: £17.99
    Phone calls: £20.08
plus £4 for non DD, £1 for itemised bills, and £2 for TW and MCP (whatever that is)

Which makes my monthly bill £75.57!!!

Please can someone advise me what to threaten them with, or what to quote as my alternative choices? I am confused!

Oh, and do you HAVE to have a BT line to get Sky?

    Thanks, in advance!

Welcome to the MSE forums icequeen55uk.

With bills like that, paying the full BT price (£124.99) to install a new line would be cost-effective within a few months.

Sky give you the STB, dish etc. and install for nothing. A minimum monthy subscription of £15 would be necessary so, with BT landline rental of £11/month, that's £26/month - £4.50 less than you're currently paying NTL. However, Sky are always offering cheap introductory rates for new subscribers.

With a BT landline, you're able to select any of the ADSL suppliers - and less than £17.99/month is easily achievable.

Your call costs would be dramatically reduced too (click the links in my signature below for examples).

    Cut and run!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

You could say your thinking about VOIP and getting rid of the line alltogether.

You could also get freeview, you can get an aerial from maplin for £15-£30 that will work in the loft.
