  • just checked the TT website, i can get free broadband! (but i'll stick with £20/month for decent) i struggled to find that p2p isnt allowed, indeed TT make a big deal of the amount of TV (bbci player is a p2p app) and music that you can d/load with 40gb (8000 tracks). another thing which made me laugh was the suggestion that the slowdown that many experience is due to load at the website itself, not insufficient backhaul from the isp, though they do mention that this is most likely to happen at peak times, forgetting that our peak and the rest of the world's are different, most US sites have a lot more traffic in our 'off peak' period than peak.

Maybe not, but Yorkshire folk in my experience, are quite adept at getting things for nowt and even then they'll often twitter and complain about it!

I'm sure that this comment will go down like a lead balloon.

    Hello vanman,

With regards to the gaming is the sync or broadband connection dropping completely or is the broadband connection stable but the connection to the game disconnecting. I need to understand this because if it is the broadband connection which is dropping then it isn’t going to be anything to do with the fact that you are gaming however if it is the game connection then it’s something else and if so do you know which ports these games use if not don’t worry I am sure I can find them.

If a customer goes over the 40Gb limit they should receive a letter advising them. With regards to P2P apps naturally due to the legal implications of using such apps for illegal downloads “not that I am saying that this is what you are using them for!” I don’t wish to comment on them individually however a TalkTalk customer should be able to use P2P apps even when a customer reaches the 40Gb limit we DO NOT stop or CAP a customer ability to browse or download from legal sites.

    Hope this helps

    Stephen

regarding gaming, it is the game that disconects from the net. the broadband connection its self is fine. TT pick up on the fact that i am using "large bandwidth" and drop the connection(which of course you already know but you are pretending you know nothing about it). i dont know what ports the games use.

I received NO letter that i had ALLEGEDLY reached my 40gb download limit,(and come on...you have got to admit that is one heck of a lot of downloads.) at the time i only had a 40gb hard drive so would have been physicaly impossible my friend.
you say and i quote- "TT customers should be able to use p2p apps"...yes we can but at silly hours in the morning and at a much reduced speed than before. when i first phoned TT to ask about the reduced speed the word that was used was "capped" and my account would be "capped" for one month.(that was in April 2007 and i still cant download) the TT fair usage policy used to use the word "capped" before it was changed.

I can indeed download from what you refer to as 'legal sites' at very high speeds. yes i must admit.. there is a lot of illegal usage from p2p but who are TT to police this???? what about those who do use it for legal downloading?

Am i on my own in this forum or has anyone else had the same problem and the same old sh#! from TT?????????

  • The internet usage is capped when you reach 5gb in any one month in order to prioritise traffic for other users who are not using P2P. But when it is capped, your still able to reach the 40gb limit, it's just the thoughput that is restricted.

If you actually do get to 40gb, this is when you will recieve a letter asking you to reduce your usage. If your usage is not reduced after a number of months, talktalk may terminate services with you.

When you are capped, you are capped for the remainder of the month plus one month. If you go over 5gb in this period, the cap is reset and you will need to wait longer to be unrestricted.

There are ways around it, by using port forwarding. And i also believe BitTorrent works if you choose to encrypt the data. You can always leave your PC on over night to download any illegal material you might want.

swapping an active LLU line back to BT is currently free.

What would it normally be then.?

Whilst BT may not charge at present time other line rental suppliers do.;)

If you are still within your 18 month contract with TalkTalk then you would be charged £70.00 for leaving us early however if out of 18 months then you wouldn't be charged anything from TT or BT.

True - however if TT have breached the contract by failing to provide you with the service you are paying for or have failed to resolved a technical problem within a satisfactory time then you can leave the contract without any penalty. They will try to fight that but don't give in!
I used to run an AV support centre and let me assure you that over the 8 months I was with TT i spoke to 9 different techs and whilst one had some idea of what was going on (the only guy i spoke to in the UK) then the 8 in india or where-ever should never have been let near a phone let alone users!
My partner puts together contract bids worth millions and when TT tried to charge us for leaving he soon pointed out a few issues with the actual contract and the terms and conditions.
Never heard from their billing department again and moved to madasafish who located the problem in 15 minutes and we haven't looked back since! And not once did they insult my intelligence by saying "we don't support that router" despite me trying theirs too and other classics like "have you rebooted your computer" (after I spent 5 minutes telling them what troubleshooting i had done including a cleanly installed OS! if they don't realise re-installing an OS involves a reboot or two... lord help them!)
Soto anyone on TT... Good luck!

Just want to check if everyone who is with Talktalk can't access www.xara.com? And whether anyone knows of any other sites we Talktalk customers alone can't access?

Must be regional or intermittent then as there was at least one other TT customer on my other thread that couldn't access the site and I've pretty much eliminated all possible causes except for ISP.
