When you say deposit, do you also mean the additional payments I’ve been making? The deposit is only £60pp but I’ve paid off over 2k

As per the Jet2 T&Cs, if you cancel outside of 70 days then you only lose your deposit.  Any monies paid over the deposit amount you would be entitled to a refund of.  Once the 70 days has gone there's a sliding scale of how much is forfeited.

The issue I’m facing is that although I’m messaging them wishing to cancel, nobody is getting back to me due to the mass of covid issues they are handling. By the time I hear back from them, I might be outside of the 70 days, but of no fault of my own.
I’ve emailed, used Facebook and Twitter but nothing

would anything stop me from getting travel insurance now?

You cannot insure for something that is a known issue.  So although you could buy travel insurance today, you would not be covered for Covid-19 related issues, or your relative's illness.

Looking on Jet2 Twitter they do seem to be replying to people within about 4 days.

I’m going to try and message them again, I’ve got 11 days before I hit the 70 mark.

Does the lead passenger “me” need insurance to cover the relatives illness, even if they have both health and travel insurance?

Insurance will only pay out for those on the policy.  Everybody needs to be insured, either by having an individual policy each, or having policies with multiple people insured.

You shouldn't need insurance though for this cancellation if you've decided you want to cancel and lose the deospit.  You just need to get it done with Jet2.  You say you've emailed, and phoned and tweeted etc.  Keep copies of all that so you can prove you've made all reasonable attempts to cancel it.  Then if you do miss the 70 days, you have some ammo to get them to make an exception.

I believe they are NOT covered currently. I wonder if this will change otherwise there will be a mass exodus of cash out the Holiday Companies.

Has Jet2 said how long the vouchers are valid?  I would only accept them if they are protected by ABTA/ATOL.
  • We decided to cancel our holiday (to Balearics at end of June) and accept we may lose the deposit.  The "Cancel online" option on the Jet2 website says it is no longer possible to cancel online and to email them, so I did so, twice, and just received automated acknowledgements.  The phone lines are closed so I could not phone them.
Lo and behold, they took the balance of £2400 off my credit card this morning anyway.  I'm hopping mad.
What should we do?  Raise it with the credit card company as an unauthorised transaction and not pay them? Or pay it and hope that the holiday gets cancelled anyway by Jet2 (fairly likely) and then wait in a long line for a refund and hope that they don't go into administration in the interim (exactly what we were trying to avoid)?  Or something else?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Even if they went into administration it is ATOL protected and you used a credit card.
