A short story about the desperation of 2 boys in Africa to tell people about the problems they face.

In 1999 a 15 and 16 year old from Guinea, East Africa tied themselves to the landing gear of a plane to Brussels, when it landed they were frozen to death. They held a letter appealing to European leaders - some exerts:

    Dear Sirs and European authorities
We call for … your kindness to assist us in Africa. Please help us we suffer a lot.., we have… some lack of children’s rights. We have a serious lack of education and teaching.
… we sacrifice ourselves, we risk our lives because we suffer much in Africa we need you to fight against poverty and to put an end to the war

    SALVATION ARMY

    http://www1.salvationarmy.org.uk/uki/www_uki.nsf/vw-dynamic-arrays/5D35EC2B04BC515880256F1900494FA9?openDocument

A Christian organisation with a wide range of help and services available.

The Salvation Army is the largest provider of social care in the UK, after the Government. Browsing on the above part of the website will give you a flavour of some of the work we do, from child care to elderly care, from homelessness projects to addiction rehabilitation.

    ALOVE (youth & youth work)
    Work with the homeless
    Community Services
    Prison ministries
    Emergency Services
    Care for children and families
    Detox/addiction services
    Elderly care
    Disability Services and Health Care
    Lifelong learning
    Red Shield Defence Services
    Family Tracing Service
    Adult and Family Ministries
    Heritage Centre
    Special Events
    Schools and Colleges
Working with other churches and faiths
    Mustard Seed Project

I dont think most people realise what a wide range of services the salvation army deal in, their budget for the last year was badly underfunded as they rely on public donations to do the work they do. If you click on the above links i think many of you will be surprised at the work they do that does not get publicised like soup runs every weekend all over the country, homeless shelters. finding missing relatives. One of the most famous childrens homes of the salvation army has just closed 'strawberry fields' in liverpool made famous by john lennon who used to stay there and visit his friends there, partly due to lack of funding and partly as they like to place children with a family and not in a home. They also provide a geat service on british military bases all over the world, providing shops, support, childrens day care facilities and counselling and support for loved ones whos partner is away in a conflict zone.

ITCH stands for Information Technology Can Help.
The purpose of ITCH is to offer computer assistance to individuals with disabilities by providing volunteers who will visit disabled people in their homes and at other locations such as day centres. Since its establishment, the Network has been providing disabled people with effective Information Technology solutions. In the past two years alone, ITCH Network has made over 2,000 visits, solving many hardware and software problems, as well as helping people to gain confidence using a computer.

The service is built around a network of skilled volunteers who are prepared to offer disabled people free, computer assistance.

People with any IT/technical skills can help out this charity by volunteering to help in their local area. Maybe its something that MSE users with their great techie knowledge could actively help out with.

A road traffic accident left a teenager with brain damage. As a result, she was deaf, unable to speak and could not leave her bed. She badly wanted to use a computer to communicate with family and friends. An ITCH volunteer obtained a laptop computer and got it repaired free of charge, with the result that the young woman now spends hours every day using her laptop to speak.

Prior to the advent of the WWW people like this teenager would have been left to vegetate in front of the television, now they have a window to the world through a pc, just as we have icon7.gif
