  • Transplant Support Network

    https://www.transplantsupportnetwork.org.uk

Supports patients, family and carers throughout organ transplants

TSN is the only UK-wide charity that provides one to one support for all types of solid organ transplants and now, mechanical implants. Its unique feature is that it matches enquiries to someone who has had the same type of transplant you are waiting for or have had. They 'have been where you are now'. Health professionals at transplant units are fantastic, but they have many patients and families but so little time and although they've witnessed so many, they've never had the operation themselves. There are over 6000 people waiting for a transplant, plus their families, many of whom need support at a critical time in their life, some in the final weeks of their life. TSN desperately needs funds to continue to provide this unique service.

ITDG (soon to be called Practical Action)

    https://www.itdg.org

    Providing practical answers to poverty

This is a great little known charity that helps improve the lives of poor people in developing countries, through the use of simple technologies. I've supported them for a few years and they have some fantastic work in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Their innovative projects include a special donkey plough that helps poor people in Sudan grow enough food to eat, smoke hoods in Kenya and Nepal that reduces indoor air pollution, helping prevent deaths of women and children from smoke inhalation, and helping train families to build special homes that can withstand floods and earthquakes in Bangladesh and Peru.

ITDG - Practical Action is really making a difference to poor peoples lives. They work together in partnership with communities, and don't believe in hand outs. Their work really is sustainable, and I think deserves support for the admirable work they do.
  • I had great difficulty in finding where to post my Nomination. I hope this is OK.

    4. One paragaph only (max 150 words) of why this charity should be supported.
It is a comparatively new charity, supporting those afflicted with Fibromyalgia, a little known and less understood painful condition. The charity needs funds in order to expand its activities and provide proper office accomodation. It is currently being run from the home of the group leader and she needs her home back! Jo Fisher has worked endlessly over the last two years to raise awareness of the condition and provide a telephone Help Line as well as organising meetings in both Crawley and Worthing where help is given in the form of advice about various therapies and pain management as well as equipment that helps make life bearable. It would be wonderful to get a grant/award from your charity fund.

This small caring Charity set up by parents, provides support to other parents & families, helping make the best possible lives for their children. Kat tries to help everyone contacting them. They are often recommended by medical professionals because of their sympathetic & specialist knowledge. They look after over 30 adults in residential & day care centres offering fantastic giudence in leading more normal lives. ALL the staff are caring, jolly, concientious, patient & professional. The Family Support Officer is an additional service for all ages that is just about to run out of funding & so unfortunately is an unsustainable resourse  She is a vital link to parents offering practical help & understanding for parents & kids of all ages :A . I would like to nominate this Family Support Officer, without whom many people would feel at the end of their tether. Thanks for listening :T

IMPORTANT: Do not nominate without reading the 'what to include in your nomination' at the end of this

Last week you voted to split this year's charity fund equally between MoneySaving kids (a fund to look at how to educate children about Money, that isn't funded by banks) and the charity fund.

    What is the charity fund?

Money is donated to five charities from the site's revenue (see 'how the site makes money'). The site follows a non-profit driven ethos, but that doesn't mean it doesn't make money. The sheer scale of the site and near 1 million visits a month, means there is cash, and I like to put as much as I can towards doing some good (after I've paid the MoneySaving team, expenses, and myself).

    What's the process?

It's a three step process to decide the charities.

    A. You nominate. Any user of the site (which means anyone of course) can nominate a charity registered in the UK to receive the money.

    B. There's a short list. Five of the site's most regular users (the volunteer board guides) will be asked to short-list 14 charities. The following are the criteria they will be asked to use when short listing.

    i. Relevance: Charities which are relevant to both the subject base and usership of MoneySavingExpert.com will be given priority.

ii. National and International: Roughly two thirds of the selection should be UK based charities and one third overseas/international.

iii. The money should make a difference. Small charities where the cash won't just go into a big pot, but will make a real difference to the charity itself will be favoured over larger charities.

    C. The Vote. Nominations end on Saturday 11th June. Next week there will be a vote on the site announced in the poll of the 15 charities (for those paying attention the extra charity is my own personal nomination). The top five charities will then have the money paid to them from the charity fund in the proportion of the vote. The winners will be announced in the tip.

To nominate a charity - please click reply below (if you're not registered on the forum, which is different to signing up to the email, you will have to do so. Of course it's totally free and your email is never used for anything else).

One more thing. The more users of this site, the more money there is for the charity fund and MoneySaving kids. The best way to get regular users is to recommend people join the distribution list of the free Money Tip. Please recommend it to everyone you know.

WHAT YOU NEED TO INCLUDE IN YOUR NOMINATION.

Please put in the following order

    1. The Official Name of the Charity

    2. The Website of the Charity

    3. A desciption of no more than 8 words of the charity

    4. One paragaph only (max 150 words) of why this charity should be supported.

If a charity has already been nominated, please do not do so again, you can show your support by clicking the 'thank you' button for that post. Also please no other discussions in this thread, it is purely for nominating.

Whilst you may nominate as many charities as you choose, remember they will be shortlisted, so it makes life easier if you just nominate one.

  • I would like to nominate St Francis Hospital, Zambia
    http://www.saintfrancishospital.net/index.html

Some doctor friends of mine volunteered there for a year and have set up this fundraising and awareness site. Given the recent high profile Live 8, Bob Geldoff and G8 summit work on raising awareness of the situation in Africa, and in particular, sub-saharan Africa I think this project is not only worthwhile, but small enough for any amount of money to make a big difference. Please support it.

    Thanks

    1. The Princess Royal Trust

    2. https://www.carers.org

    3. Helps carers by providing information and support for carers.

    4. A carer is someone who cares for another, who due to illness, disability or
age, cannot manage on their own. A carer may be a parent, husband, wife,
partner, daughter, son, friend or neighbour. Carers can be any age from the elderly to the very young. Although caring can be rewarding and satisfying, sometimes it can be tiring and stressful too. You may be worried about money, or your own health, you may need help applying for benefits or want someone to talk to about your situation or you may need practical or emotional support. It is our aim to work with others to ensure a better quality of life for all carers by providing support, information and a voice for carers.

    5. In the true spirit of MSE the trust does a wonderful job in ensuring that carers get all the benefits and tax breaks they deserve.
If money saving starts to involve irritation or frustration the fine line between thrift and greed should be examined.

    Rhodes Minnis Cat Sanctuary

    https://www.rhodes.tk

Giving unwanted cats and kittens new homes

Rhodes Minnis Cat Sanctuary is based near Canterbury in Kent and takes in and rehomes cats from all over Kent and also London. They have a high rehoming success rate, in addition they look after a number of feral cats and have several "house" cats who are unsuitable for rehoming; they will never put a healthy cat down. Over the last few years they have made a number of improvements to their facilities, including updating boarding pens and adding a new kittery - a place where they can keep a close eye on pregnant and nursing mothers and their kittens. The charity is run solely from charitable donations, fund raising, a small charity shop in Folkestone and profits from the boarding cattery.

I just pop in now and then.... :)

£5M appeal to ensure the viability of Francis House

    4. One paragaph only (max 150 words) of why this charity should be supported.

Late one evening just before Christmas last year, I was surfing the net (on MSE of course) and half watching TV, when I got engrossed in a documentary about the Francis House children's hospice in Manchester. I felt very grateful to be the parent of 2 healthy children and I was moved to support them financially in the wonderful work that they do for the terminally ill children and their families. Francis House receives less than 4% government funding, so all the running and caring costs are by voluntary donation only. £5 million is needed to ensure the long-term viability of the hospice and the consequences of that figure not being raised aren’t worth thinking about. The current total raised to date is £3,500,183 so every little helps.

I read this and thought "well, OK, lots of MSE lurkers have chosen to post" - but, looking more carefully, a lot of people only seem to have joined in June 2005! Maybe someone has put out a note about this on some charity fund-raising site, just as we get posts on MSE which encourage mobs of us to sign up for bargains: top marks for initiative there.

    Pam

Sorry, people, that was a silly remark (as I realised half an hour later when heading away from internet connection for the day!): of course anyone posting for the first time will only have joined today, as there's no need to register until you want to post a message. Welcome to all new participants in the joys of MSE forums - if you've not yet explored the other forums, you've got treats in store.

It's fascinating to see how many worthy causes there are, and the selectors are going to have a real job to pick the shortlist. Good luck to them.

3.Funds research and education into M.E./ Chronic Fatigue syndrome

4.There is no Gov't funding into research for the causes of this debilitating neurological illness which has around 250.000 suffererers in the UK some of them children as young as 5. The illness has a huge impact on the lives of families and carers but they have little or no support. The cause of the illness is still unknown and therefore no cure or effective treatment has yet been found. It is important to find a cause for this illness and give sufferers back some semblance of a normal life which for some has not been the case for 20 years or more. MERGE is a dedicated group of doctors and scientists, some of them sufferers themselves, who are determined to discover the cause of ME, under very difficult financial circumstances.
Please vote for MERGE and give us back our lives

MERGE Need funding so badly to give back both children and adults a life where they can live rather than just exist , few people understand the detrimental effects of this disease. Give this charity support and help them find a treatment even if not a cure.
