Milton Keynes Hospital Radio has been broadcasting for 21 years, Our running costs have spiralled recently with the need to pay for licences previously waived, Insurance has increased dramatically. Our volunteers work all hours raising funds to ensure the continual improvement of the service. We have just had to spend £2000 on a security system and about the same on a new automatic playout system.

Please put in the following order
1. Make Poverty History
2. http://www.makepovertyhistory.org/
3. Cancelling world debt, put an end to starvation
4. I feel this is possibly an obvious (but timely) charity to suggest - it might be seen as too popular right now. But it does link to the aims as I understand them of https://www.moneysavingexpert.com, even if on a more drastic scale. If a site aims to save money and eliminate the chances of corrupt corporate profit adversely affecting the individual, surely it should support a site that aims to do this on a global scale? Also, there are benefits here in the UK - through their curriculum support programme, children are being made more aware of the world view and will hopefully become better citizens.Snootchie Bootchies!0 -

One in four of us will experience a mental health problem at some point in our lives. Each year more than 250,000 people are admitted to psychiatric hospitals and over 4,000 people take their own lives."

shrek101 wrote:Just wondered how strange it is how some many people have posted in this thread and haven't posted before. Not that the charities they mentioned aren't important as they are, some good charities have been mentioned.
I read this and thought "well, OK, lots of MSE lurkers have chosen to post" - but, looking more carefully, a lot of people only seem to have joined in June 2005! Maybe someone has put out a note about this on some charity fund-raising site, just as we get posts on MSE which encourage mobs of us to sign up for bargains: top marks for initiative there.

Hatings and Rother Bond Board
https://www.bondbank.org.uk
Reduces homelessness by assisting with tenants deposits, enablement.
This little charity is manned by one manager, a part time administrator, and occaisionally funded for part time project worker, hence nomination!
Non priority housing need cases are helped with a bond to access private rented sector, although much extra support on benefits / housing advice is given. We guarantee their deposit for approx 2 years. Clients are encouraged to save into local Credit Union, via us, to accumulate own deposit. This empowers and enables clients to help themselves.
Clients often have other issues and need ongoing support once in their own home to maintain successful tenancy. Having a secure, safe roof is paramount to ongoing progress. We are *busy* and our stats make impressive reading for a two roomed basement operation! :-):hello: You never know that you're having the time of your life until you've had it!

Church Housing Trust
https://www.churchhousingtrust.org.uk
Supporting training and rehabilitation of the homeless
Church Housing Trust supports hostels, move-on homes and day centres throughout England. Resettlement and rehabilitation are key priorities, and the charity provides funding for education and training in areas ranging from cooking to computer skills. A key area of need is the provision of resettlement packs. For many homeless people leaving a hostel and ‘moving on’ can be a desperately lonely experience, and simply coping with everyday living may tax their abilities to the limit. They often cannot afford to purchase basic household necessities, so Church Housing Trust’s funding for resettlement packs means they can start off with essential household items, thus easing their burden as they leave the hostel environment. With this encouragement homeless people can return to life in the community knowing that someone understands and cares and will continue to support them in their first months of independence in their own home.0 -
Carers UK
https://www.carersuk.org
working to improve the lives of carers
Carers UK provides a voice for carers campaigning for a world where their vital contribution in looking after their loved ones is fully recognised and valued.
Every year 2.3 million people in the UK become carers looking after a partner, family member or friend who cannot manage without their help because they are ill, frail or have a disability.
Becoming a carer often involves making major life-style changes which impose severe limitations on an individual’s ability to work or to enjoy a normal social life. Many carers suffer severe financial hardships, social isolation and chronic health problems, both physical and mental, as a result of their caring role.
The work of Carers UK has enabled thousands of carers to receive the services and financial support they urgently need, but there is still much work to be done before carers can expect to live their lives like everyone else.0 -

I think it is a great idea of Martin's to have put the charity nomination on the email - it has certainly got me to sign up instead of just lurking (not that there is any harm in that). Thanks to everyone for what they contribute and you will now have lots of new "posters" thanks to the incentive to sign up now :T0 -
I would like to nominate:
The Stroke Association
https://www.stroke.org.uk
Offers support, welfare grants and family support to stroke victims.
From their website: "If you have had a stroke or been affected by stroke in any way you may have questions about what has happened and what is likely to happen in the future. You may simply want some practical or emotional support or someone to talk to. We can help you and your family deal with the changes inevitably caused by a stroke. "
My daughter's Godfather had a stroke earlier this year, and it is terrifying how life changing a stroke is. Life will never be the same again. Please support this charity.
Thanks.0
