SSDD23 - medicine is exempt, you can keep your NSD if that is all you bought.

    For me yesterday was NSD1.
There is something in the water today, I swear. The kids were rotten this morning and they should count themselves lucky they are at school. I am livid with them all. Hostage situation sums it up perfectly.

Today will be NSD2. Off to volunteer now.

    Hi All,

    Today is NSD number 2.:T
I have bought some cereal but it is on "try me Free" and I will be reimbursed. I have also been gathering up promotions for build a bear, my little one really wants to go for his birthday & they do a pay your age offer (and he is only 3 woohoo) plus they've sent me a coupon for a free accessory. I know it will cost me, but I would be going anyway...

Today I am grateful for - early release from captivity (I only work Monday to Thursday) , for feeling a little better and for my friend giving my son a Mr men book, he loves them xx

As it wasn't a spend free day anyway I bought my first Christmas/St Nikolaus presents for the kids. They loved the Christmasaurus book but we're reading this for the third year running and fancied the follow up anyway which is on sale just now. They've already written their lists so I might get a few things as I see offers.

thrifty I always told myself that books didn't count. Perhaps I should add it to the turtle rules (only for children though, not letting you off if you do a repeat purchase of the lovely planner you bought yourself.

As soon as we were all dressed we used to have reading time - often 10 books and they still didn't want me to get on and do something else. I once demonstrated to DS3 that we didn't need a new copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar or The night Before Christmas because i knew them by heart.

Ours are 5 and 8 now and still get a bedtime story each every night and don't see an end to that yet. At least they've moved on to chapter books now that we find interesting too :T.

Shame my planner doesn't count, need a new gratitude journal ;)

f0xh0les - the marriage may have survived the wallpapering, but the retuning-of-the-telly-thus-wiping-the-timer-for-recording-the-rubgy-that-I'd-set-up was a much closer thing... Fortunately, the highlights had yet to be broadcast, so we are still together...

Thanks for your ideas thrifty :). I used to have a salad every day for lunch but have got out of this habit. Today's healthy eating has gone better - had toast and banana for breakfast and added cherry tomatoes to my lunch of crackers and cheese. Tonight's tea is going to be omelette so will pop loads of veg into it and have fruit for pudding.

    Today has been a NSD, 2/15 :D

My sister gave me a winter jacket that no longer fit which had a seam coming away so I mended that today.

Free socialising with a friend today, she popped round for a coffee and to say bye before I leave tomorrow.

Okay I've scribbled down the Winter Prep list and it took a long time. I think I am going to start putting it up now(went downstairs to make lunch and need to revise any plans that require movement).

    For NEW TURTLES
I often do this as a mini challenge over one week of the monthly challenge or one bit a week during the month. As I said before it's nothng to worry about. I.m putting it up now in case there are any items you want to add to your weekly shopping list or things you know you have but may need to find or extricate from somewhere in your house.

First a brief summary of Martin's weekly e-mail - top item in the column to the right of this thread entitled WINTER IS COMING.
    1 Energy Myths
No it is NOT cheaper to leave your heating on low all day.

2 Collect 'free' hot drinks from stores for yourself or for a rough sleeper
3 Check how your energy supplier measures up and switch

4 Free car check - oil, battery, bulbs, wipers and screenwash
5 Check boiler cover including whether you need it
6 Own brand or generic medicines are as good (sometimes identical) to over advertised leading brands
    7 Breakdown cover
8 Free loft and cavity wall insulation - only available for those in receipt of certain benefits
9 DIY sausage dogs Link to WINTER PREP thread
10 How to find your STOPCOCK (wonder if it will get past the censor elves)
11 If you are over 64 and on benefits you may be eligible for winter fuel allowance.
12 Free advice for those forced to choose between heating and eating.

    HEALTH (in the pink)
1 You are going to get sick. No matter how healthy you are, no matter how hard you try colds and flu and the dreaded D and V will hit you or your loved ones at some point. The changing seasons are great for bugs, not so good for the sufferers
2 Stock up Now on generic medicines or natural alternatives to avoid paying extortionate prices when you are at your weakest.
3 Honey and hot lemon are warming and soothing (especially if you can't have certain medicines). Cheap lemonade will replace salts and sugars lost by children with D and V. Epsom salts in a bath are good for those with joint pains
4 Make up some soups and easy meals and freeze them for when you are too ill to cook or can barely stand up. It's even permissible to have a few cans in the cupboard (dodges KAT missile). Rice pudding is good too.
5 Do you or anyone you are responsible for need a flu jab. I know some people don't agree with them but as someone who struggles with a four month sick period over winter (mum has no immune system, mine is compromised) I'm not prepared to find out how much worse it is without the flu jab (I came close to being hospitalised last year).
6 If you or your children are struggling to get enough veg, start taking a vitamin pill now
7 When they are sick children will enjoy the comfort of old familiar things - it's worth keeping a few 'baby toys' for these times. I used to get to play with the meccano - my brothe's wouldn't let me near it but when I was off sick i could sneal in their room and grab it. mum never minded as long as we were quiet - she once forgot to feed me and the elder of my two brothers as we were so quiet. baby bro was a different kettle of fish, demanding attention.

    NEW
8 Always have an up to date meds list to hand for yourself or anyone you are responsible for (particularly for those of us who now have a medicine list or those caring for elderly relatives or sick children. Things like STEROID use need to be highlighted
9 if you or anyone you know use the green cross scheme make sure the details are up to date. Green cross bottles are commonly handed out by voluntary organisations, the bottle with medical information and a pills list is kept in the fridge and a green cross sticker goes on the front door so that paramedics know where the information is, in an emergency.
10 Most mobile phones have an ICE feature - you write in information needed IN Case of Emergency. Next of kin etc.
11 Any supplements you are taking need to be noted. This came up on another thread. The poster's mother had had an annual review and the doctor asked about any other things she was taking. Her innocuous garlic oil capsule was actually dangerous in combination with one of her prescribed medications. I buy my own hayfever tablets from the ound emporium or wilco's as although I am entitled to free prescription items the NHS would be charged the £9 prescription fee. I can afford to buy the cheapo items (hasn't been the case throughout my life) so it's my little contribution to helping the NHS.

Not a worst case scenario but something that could happen to anyone.
12 Suppose you have a minor injury (sprained ankle, a fall that leaves you shaken and sore but not in need hospitalisation). Do you have enough food in for 4 or 5 days, especially if you live alone. It might be worth putting a box of long life food (tins of soup, fruit, beans and a pack of pasta and rice) away somewhere just in case. KAT emphasised living with just enough but I know several of you have had injuries and I don't like going out when it's icy (I have the under stairs shelves filled with long life items). *** Plus food for any doggies or kitties 9chinchillas, snakes or giraffes)

When DS2 was about 7 yo he broke his elbow. he couldn't have a cast, had an operation to hold it together with 'pins' (basically six inch nails) and they wouldn't let him in school as the classrooms were upstairs and they were afraid of him falling on the stone steps. He couldn't walk far or fast as his arm banged painfully on his chest and he was too young for me to be comfortable leaving him on his own for very long. Just a quick sprint to school to pick up the other two, drop off and pick up homework for DS2 and a dash round the nearest shop for more supplies. I was confined to the house for several weeks.

13 Do you have a hospital bag?
Something else I hadn't thought about but even the basics (nightie, toothbrush and flannel according to the paramedic) handy in a bag. Not just for yourself but if your child has an accident (they do, they do) and you have to sleep in a WWI fold out bed by his/her side, or have to dash across the borough or a county or two to be with an elderly relative who has been hospitalised.

My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.
