  • Are they economy7 heaters? Foxgloves has some experience of these, although I'm not sure if she's reading atm

    Thanks CLF.

I don’t believe they are. It won’t let me post a link to them since I’m a newbie, but if anyone can give advice, they are the Elnur RF8E-plus 1000W digital inertia electric radiators.

Nothing in the user manual that I can see to tell me the most economical way to use them.
Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship.
    Debt at highest = £62,842.59 (Dec 2018) - now £38,266.22 (28.09.25)
    Mortgage start Dec 2024 £247,069.59 - now £243,150.28
    Mortgage overpayment total = £300
    Emergency fund £1006.63/£12000
  • Hey! :coffee:
What a day! My freezer has broken (the one attached to the fridge). I thought it was just the door seal, so I'd bought a new one and finally replaced it this morning and it didn't work  I even got my stepdad over to have a look but he decided it was beyond help. So, I thought I was being all mse buying a new seal for £35 but I've wasted that money because I've still had to buy a new freezer anyway. I'm quite devastated - it's another big expense in the 6 months I've been on my own but it's not something I can do without.
I have managed to get it on a buy now pay in 12 months deal so I can hang onto the few pennies I have at the minute and can hopefully squirrel the rest away over the next year.
Other than that time has been spent rescuing what I can to my other freezer and rediscovering loads of stuff at the bottom of the big freezer. I can't bring myself to do anything else at all today - that has been a big enough job when I'm just getting back on my feet again.

Ah no :( would you be able to sell the seal? Or is it done with now it's fitted?

CCl, sorry to hear that, its the last thing you needed just now.

    HI  to all

    Todays list from me
    * washed a load on the quick wash and hung out to [STRIKE]dry [/STRIKE] bring in feeling nearly as wet and very cold just now :(
    * went to aldee with my little list (left hubby and kids at home which always helps!) stuck to the list - just getting the fresh bits as I want to use up what we have in, in the hope that I can switch off one of my fridge freezers when we go away next week (sorry CCL!)
    * out for a pub lunch for dh's birthday earlier in the week, all paid for apart from £1 by clubcard vouchers. We only got 2 desserts between the 8 of us to spend close to the £81 I had in vouchers, we all had a little taster and had planned to actually come home for birthday cake as dessert instead but we are all too full!
    * family came back for coffee and chat which was nice, also got my niece to go through the fabrics I'd got down from the loft earlier in the week to see if there was anything suitable for her to recover her headboard. She's taken some cushion inners, an old curtain for her headboard (the colour match to her cushions is brill!) There was another piece of fabric that I'm going to recover my stool with and the rest of the fabric has been put in my car to go to the charity shop tomorrow. Someone else may as well have the use of them rather then them sitting in my loft (been there already about 10yrs!)
    * also put other cs bags in the car for tomorrow, inc picture frames, mirror cushion covers
    * made families lunches for tomorrow
    * started a to do list in my bullet journal, I need to be really productive tomorrow/Tues as dh is on hol from Wed and we want to do Christmas shopping, lunch out just the two of us , flu jabs, car service and secret holiday packing before the kids break up for half term on Friday
    * still no heating on as the boiler repair is hopefully happening tomorrow afternoon. So candles/blankets and extra layers here. I had wanted to try keeping the heating off til the 1st Nov so a few days of it not working anyway have helped with that :rotfl: although I wanted to keep it off as long as possible to save the pennies but need to spend lots of £'s now to get it fixed!

Right I better go as ds is nagging me.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend all.

    Evening all :)
CCL, sorry to hear about your fridge freezer :(. Any defrosted food can be cooked and then refrozen, which won't help if you have already thrown it away, but may be useful for future reference. I spent most of one night last winter cooking up food that had defrosted when my OH managed to turn off the freezer in our conservatory  but did manage to salvage most of it.

DNMS, what a pain re the car keys. Is it worth posting on local FB page? Lost / found items often find their way back to owners this way round here, especially keys and babies' favourite soft toys :)
    Busy weekend, mainly family stuff.
    Few small things:
Got some cheap plants to brighten up my pots at a boot sale this morning - already planted one big pot up with winter pansies :)
Got a huge bargain while I was there - an unopened multi pack of cartridges for my printer for £2 :T They normally cost £40  I buy them for my business, so it is a business cost, but still....

Washed hair and let it dry naturally
Got load of washing dry outside
Did a shop at Aldi - most of it ended up being OH's beer  Didn't get half of what was needed. Will go back tomorrow on my own and shop properly
Peeled, cut up and cooked down a carrier bag of fallen cooking apples that OH was given the other day. Now in tubs waiting to go in the freezer :)

Listed some books on ebay - if they don't sell, they can go to the CS.
All food from home (very rare to do anything else here tbh)
Must now sort the RM surveys stuff out for the week, as I know there are items to go tomorrow.
Also 2 ebay sale items to pack ready for posting.

Not sleeping still, great due to coughing / asthma, so going to get an early night!

    5. Heating off. Still determined not to put this on until absolutely necessary. All children wrapped up snuggly and perfectly happy :). On that note, I mentioned before that we have electric radiators rather than central heating in our current property. Not sure we used them particularly economically last year (constantly off/on). Have since read that the best thing to do is keep them on constantly once you first turn them on, but set a comfortable ambient temperature at times you’re using a room with a cooler temperature setting for when you’re not. Apparently, because the radiators are thermostatic, they will turn themselves off when the right room temperature is reached and keeping the room at a constant temperature saves more energy than heating it from cold every time. Can anyone confirm this please??

Nope, nopity, nope-ski. Please do not leave your radiators on all the time, unless you medically cannot tolerate the temperature fluctuation. The Energy Saving Trust have confirmed that leaving them on is poor advice. When they're on set the thermostat to the coolest comfortable temperature you can tolerate so you don't overheat the room.

  • Morning all :coffee:
It's half term! but I have woken up with a little headache. Just about to have my first cuppa of the day and see if that helps.
Spent the rest of the evening clearing the fridge and meal planning to within an inch of my life. Just about ready for the new fridge to come at some point tomorrow and start all over again. I always vow to be better with food prep and stuff but I'm truly rubbish at it.
Today I'm in a meeting all day with the exam board - the good news is that it's online so I don't even have to brush my hair. :rotfl: It will also net me some much needed extra cash for Christmas.
    Nothing else much to report.
