I would be interested in this phone to use to get the internet on the go.

Can anyone please explain what 3g is?

Also whats the difference in an MP3 and an ipod?

Also how does WiFi work? Would I have to be in a place that offers WiFi like hotels for it to work?

I know these questions may seem very basic but I am trying to learn.

    Many thanks.

3G is basically the fastest way data can be delivered to your phone from a provider. Its pretty fast with speeds up to 2mbps, tho that isnt always the case.

The iphone supports edge which is slower however not as slow as the critics suggest.

An Ipod is an mp3 player made by apple whereas mp3s are songs that are compressed by taking out parts in a song that pretty much only a dog can hear.

And for Wifi, you would need to be a place where its availible.

    Thank you for the reply.

Am I right in thinking that WiFi is a place that has a router that allows everyone to use it???

Is it possible to have a phone that will connect to the internet if you are not by a WiFi place? On the bus for example?

    Thanks
    Nikki.

Here is a website that goes through the process of unlocking the iPhone:

  • Be careful as there are many sites advising how to unlock your Iphone, but these relate to USA versions. The UK version although has the same firmware is slightly different. People are working on it though.

Also be aware that unlocking an iphone can cause problems such as the inability to recieve SMS messages even though you can send them and Safari Browser problems.

Dont want you all popping into CPW or 02 paying £269 for a brick...:D
  • be careful, my brother has just bought one in thailand and has has problems since he brought it back

do not buy a Iphone from the states currently, it CANNOT be unlocked
  • I bought a US one a month ago, and lots of people think they cannot be unlocked, but they can. It is not an easy thing to do though, and you have to be fairly 'tech savvy' to do it, but it can all be done for free. Mine works on Orange with no problems at all.

However, I would say that as a phone it is pretty rubbish, and the novelty wears off very quickly and some of it's features become downright irritating.

I have since gone back to my N95 and the iPhone is sat on my desk gathering dust.......

Take a look at some of the unlocking guides http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=136 to see if you think you are up to it. Make sure you chose the right guide for your particular version of phone though or else you will be stuck with an expensive brick.
